Measures the gases in the exhaust and it used to regulate and check the ratio of Fuel injected to air. Important bit of kit and you will have no end of problems if it is US. They are charging you ?300 because they are called stealers and that is probably the book price for replacing one
I'd check out a price from your local VW independant specialist.

We had a customer with a V5 that needed both probes on the space of a month
He was charged ?157 for the one before the cat & ?146 for the one after the cat
I would query the price & see if its one or two that they are changing.........I would very much doubt it is two as I have never seen both go faulty at the same time
?157 sounds about right from a dealer. I was ?200ish at Heathrow VW for the pre cat one. From memory they charged me about 1/2 labour to diagnose (was desperate)[:'(]
It was all charged at book time & we are one of the cheapest VW dealerships in regards to labour rates.........be very surprised if you could get it done much cheaper from another dealer
I recently replaced the front Lambda probe on my 2002 V5, it was ?108
inc VAT for the part and took 5 minutes to fit !!!. The only slight
complication is that you need VAGCOM to reset the management
system after the new probe is fitted (another 5 minutes).

?331???? Christ, that's ridiculous, well OTT mate! But on the other hand, you should be glad they didn't wash it.. I've heard many stories of dealers washing cars when they're brought in for repair, then when the owner comes to pick it up, there's a couple of new scratches here and there!
I see that you used a certain dealer in Slough, I am not going to
comment on them on here, only to say that you would be better off to
travel a bit further and use Citygate (formerly Rye Mill) in High
Wycombe, my experience of them is good and they know the difference
between a lambda sensor and a throttle body!
Christ I hate VW dealers with a passion, and each time a little fault appears on my VW, I'm paying out hundreds and hundreds.
I know it probably goes against the grain of this community, but I'm at a real crossroads as to wether to keep this car or not, becuase
I can't afford for stuff like this to keep happening on a 4 year old car []
Right mate, i'll give you two top tips to help you from getting fleeced in future!! []
First of all, if you have any other faults crop up in future, make sure you come on here and ask all of us first, we're probably more knowledgable than the dealers!
And we DO know the difference between a lambda sensor and a throttle body!! lol..
And secondly, stop taking it to the stealers, they will always over charge you. Instead i'd recommend you start taking the car to an independant VW specialist from now on! Their work is usually better and somewhat cheaper for the same job! [Y]
I believe I have a faulty lamda probe. Every now and again the engine warning light comes on. Usually I take it to my local independant garage who disconnect and replace the probe. The car is then fine for a while, then the light comes back on, again I take it to my local independant garage who disconnect and replace the probe.
Sometimes the engine warning light will dissapear after a couple of days before i've taken it to the garage.
The garage haven;t replaced the lamda probe as they say it's a fairly costly part, and if it's not that part that's costing the problem, they;re left with a part they can't use.

Absolutely agree with the above. Even if you choose to continue using a dealer, come here to get some knowledge before you go so that you (A) don't get ripped off, and (B) can help the dealer with diagnosing your problem!!
Just a point of interest, I wonder whether you actually needed the TB replacing. There's a lot of posts on here regarding engine problems that have been rectified by cleaning the part as opposed to replacing it.
