Kwik Fit are currently offering to service your air con. for ?44.95,which includes a full diagnostic check with regas and lubricant.Their claim is that if you don't get at least a 10% drop in the temperature that your a/c puts out,you don't pay anything.
I have two local Kwik Fits, neither of them have a very good reputation,so has anyone else let Kwik Fit service their air con.,and if so,were there any pitfalls?

Jsut found this on there website.. a picture of the poster is there but you cant makeout the small print at the bottom and the terms and condtions are not stated. Not a bad peice for a dealer re-gas ( although they will probably try to replace your bulbs :- ) :-

charge or no charge at Kwik-Fit

Like other parts of your car, your air conditioning performance deteriorates over time. Every year, a vehicle can lose an estimated 10% of the gas that is required to keep your air conditioning system working efficiently. For this reason, most car manufacturers recommend that air conditioning is recharged or serviced every 2 years. Without this regular maintenance your car engine will have to work even harder to keep you cool which means it will need to use even more fuel.

With an air conditioning recharge at Kwik-Fit we will assess and top-up your air conditioning system so that the gas and lubricant content of the system is optimised in accordance with manufacturers? specifications. It is not a service where component parts are fixed or replaced.

Let Kwik-Fit recharge your air-con while-you-wait for ?44.95. As part of our recharge service, we use the latest air-con diagnostic equipment to check and optimise your vehicle?s air-con lubricant and refrigerant levels. In under an hour, our specially trained technicians will show you the difference in you air-con system before and after the recharge.

And you only pay by results!

If your coolest air-con vent temperature doesn't improve by 10% or more ? you pay nothing. Contact your nearest centre for detai

It looks like a simple re-gas only on offer from their blurb..

"With an air conditioning recharge at Kwik-Fit we will assess and top-up your air conditioning system so that the gas and lubricant content of the system is optimised in accordance with manufacturers? specifications. It is not a service where component parts are fixed or replaced"

I'd rather be sure the other component parts of the airconditioning system are being checked to see if they are all working properly when I get mine serviced & for that reason & also because of past experience of their tyre fitting, I will not use them.

I'm with the majority here. I have seen Kwik Fit monkeys in action and heard stories of their workmanship, hence never have and never will take my car there. Plus, their prices are expensive anyway. They are a tyre/exhaust/battery fitting company, and struggle with that most of the time, so I think you'd be mad to let them loose on something as complex as an aircon system.

I have to say that I agree with the above statement.

I have a simple belief and that is that I never let anybody work on or under my car while they are smoking ****!!!!!! The last time I went to them, they were leaning all over the engine bay smoking.

Shows a compltete lack of professionalism and respect for customers cars.

we (Halfords) have started offering this service 2.

What a disaster!!!!

No training is given atall. All we got was an A4 page of instructions. Luckily the few i have done have been ok but god knows what il do when they start going bottoms up.

I would always pay the little bit extra and make sure its done by the pros.

This is what worrys me. Companies are offering a service when a. They are not equipped with the equipment to do it and b. they are not equipped with the people who know and understand how to use the equipment and carry out the work. I heard a company local to me offering a summer aircon check dirt cheap, and a couple of people said that they went there and didnt even have the equipment to do it, bearing in mind they had taken out an ad specifically for it in the local rag...

Also working at halfords where we offer the service ive found it isnt bad for a check and regas with all the customers noticing and improvement except where compressors were knackerd. When checking the system we are just testing the coolant pressure within the system from the low pressure port. Many companies sell regas kits, if it was extremely difficult thing to do or unsafe surely it wouldnt be something you could get off the shelf. Now to go against what i said, you would be better off with a full refrigerant drain and the UV dyed gas as mentioned above as parts of the system are run under high pressure and can leak. But who can you trust as ive seen monkeys at kwik fit, stealerships and even working with myself.

Ok guys and thanks for all the answers,I need my air con.serviced,so I think I'll go to my local independent specialist instead.

As a matter of interest, what is the normal temperature Mk.4s go down to when they're working at full efficiency?
