Be prepared to fork out ?80 for a new MAF in a few months aswell,
K&Ns have oil in them which quite literally will ruin the MAF (Mass
Air Flow sensor)

Well apart from a standard filter what other options is there.I used them on nearly all my cars previous and hand no probs .Even  my V6 Vectra had the maf in the same place and as long as the filter is not over oiled it should be ok.I understand if you over oil the filter there is a chance of oil fowling the maf sensor.

There is actalaully a few other options,

Smooth the interior of the current air filter and fit an 800mm hose
with a standard filter (changed regularily) or use a green cotton filter

Had mine in for 12 months now and no problems- they actually get better
as they get older as the oil. I've also re-oiled it with no
problems.

Sure some people have bad experiences with any product.

When I came to clean mine you can see why the oil is there. The amount of crap that was in it was untrue.

You'll probably need a new MAF anyway with a Golf at some point.
Bet all the people who replaced them on this site didn't have panel
filters!!!

The maf has a platinum wire in it that heats up to 900degrees or so to
burn of any rubbish that is on it, now as you you know oil doesnt burn
of it just leaves a hardened residue, this is what ruins the MAF,
gradually the readings will lower accross the board, at the endof the
day its your choice but a green cotton filter is cheaper anyway.

Cheers Jase

As I said always ran them with no probs and my other cars all had a Maf after the air filer and I have not experianced any problems in the past. Induction kits just drag hot air in unless shielded away from the heat so didnt want one of them.

I've had a K&N panel filter and now a K&N Typhoon cone filter for well over a year no problems. In fact I had my two air mass sensor failures under warranty way before the K&N filters were installed.

There's shedloads of oil flying around on the "clean" side of the filter anyway, and if there's more oil coming off your filter than there is from the engine, you've over-oiled it big time.

After listening to this sort of rubbish before, I checked my intake. You get more engine oil than any oil off the K&N filter!! You should be careful as K&N are very hot on this issue, there is absolutely no proof that their filters ruin MAFs. Last time I spoke to them about it they wanted details of who had being saying they do! The word slander was mentioned and the word lawyers.

If you have proof, please post it...

Me too, I have done over 30k with the K & N in and had no problems, I have cleaned it, and re oiled it no issues. when I had my revo done the auto electician checked the voltage to my maf and thought it was a little low, I thought oh shit i have over oiled the filter, but he insisted that he would try one of his new maf's, he did and that gave a worse reading, so back in went the original. Had the filter 3 yrs now, in 2 cars No worries.

Everytime someone mentions K/N, someone else comes along and shouts 'DEAD MAF'!!!!!!!!!

Its a joke to be honest!

I've personally ran a k/n airfilter in my car for maybe the last
18months and have covered 20k+ miles on it. I cleaned and oiled
it when it was new, and I did it again around 15k miles later.

I've not had any problems whatsoever.

Infact to prove the point, my MPG hasn't increased at all

and this week I've topped 160 (several times) whilst leaving behind

a) Gti Turbo (who maxed out at 140 several times)

b) Merc CLS500 (which was limited to 155)

So please don't be put off by the scare stories! Just follow the instructions on the box, and it will be fine!

Of course you get oil on the intake side, thats where the breather
system is piped to, however this is AFTER the MAF, WTF I should be
carefull! why because I have witnessed the burnt residue of oil on a
MAF that k&n filter had been used on.... sorry then my airflow
readings on block 3 of vag com where 40% lower than they should have
been across the whole rev range and it was the 1st MAF I have seen used
with a k&n. and the platinum wire had black residue brunt to it
that wouldnt come of with isopropyl alcohol.

It makes me laugh when so many people say Oh my MAF'S fine, just
because the CEL isnt on doesnt mean it is OK, to check it properly you
need to log block 3 in vag com, and peak air flow should be around 80%
of the cars power output IE my car with a fubar maf felt OK, however
its peak airflow was just 125gm ps after a new maf was fitted it sits
at 175gm ps which is roughly 84% of the cars power output (I have
checked the power a Butt Dyno).

After I posted my reply I just browsed the site and found about 5 or 6
threads on people having MAF Problems- not one with a K&N - see for
yourself. One had a cold air intake and flooded his engine going
through a puddle, which is more serious but no one has ever said -
don't get a cold air intake!! As I said, everyone will experince
bad with any possible product you can buy.

Nope I didn't over oil it - i cleaned it after 6 months and put less oil on.

So which is worse - oil in MAF of chunks in engine??????

To be honest I think its everyone to their own on this one.

Maybe a bit of overdoing it with the oil on the filter may cause probs long term but as said I have never had a issue with k&n in the past as I have never over oiled them.

And all I wanted to say was

Euro car parts are selling K&N panel filters for most Golf mk4 models for ?35 [:D]
