Just fitted the smoothed airbox (inc green filter) and 80mm ducting mod to the car ------- and it works.

There is a definite improvement in the way the cars pulls in lower rev range - so pleased with a worthwhile mod. (posted some pics - was able to add an air intake to the front of the pipe.

I got the Green filter and ducting pipe from Demon Tweeks as already mentioned. The actual air duct (on front of pipe) came from Merlin Motorsport. This is fixed to the air duct with 90mm ID adhesive lined plastic heat shrink (very strong stuff) - also from MM http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/

Snap!!!!!, ive just finished my air box duct mod as well, i bought the 80 mm ducting from badger5, for ?20 delivered!!!!, great service, i should start my car today , and then i,ll do some MAF logs to see what difference its made, ive stuck with a new OEM paper filter though, so my readings will probably be lower compared to yours which has a green filter, but it should be better still than the restrictive little pipe they put as standard!, i,ll also do a throttle body alignment as well before staring the car.

The most time consuming part is actually smoothing the airbox -- the duct came in a 1 metre length and that fitted straight on.

I used a dremel to speed things up - but you can score the ribbed sections inside the airbox with a sharp knife and then alot of them will snap off in one piece (use pliers). You just then have to clean up whats left behind (could probably use a small file and then emery paper for this). I took about 3/4 hour to smooth, not rushing.

(Anyone scoring with the knife first be very careful - of yourself and the box).

''It is possible to smooth the airbox without a dremel type tool (how much are they?)'' ------ the airbox or the dremel. The dremel is a great little tool for all types of work, not sure how much but worth it.

The Green Filters are ?36.86 (inc Mkiv member discount and free p&p) from Demon Tweeks (Tel. Dave Poole 01978 663067)

As for whether this better than a CAI -- the mod works performance wise, so its just down to whether you want the CAI noise I guess.

GaryM suggested this mod to me last week and to be honest I wasn't sure what you meant mate.

But now I do and it looks very effective, bang for bucks, kind of way.

Basically, this is a low down cold air pick up through your standard smoothed out airbox, with a cotton filter, or similar ?? Is that correct.

Can someone post a definitive 'how to' on this.

There really is nothing to it --- this is the original Vortex thread http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=666711&page=1

You don't necessarily have to provide an 'extra' seal around the duct as it enters the airbox (as on Vortex). There is already a rubber gasket in the airbox for the original 'snorkel' pipe ----- this gasket fits perfectly around the new ducting.

OK, so you need to take the front bumper off for this, which is fine, but... how do you get the bonnet release pull type thing off so you can get the bumper off ???, you know the bit that pops out when you pull the release inside the car [:S]
