I own one, so lets get that straight.

A mint 1.8T with revo and 18's blah blah.......so i aint having a go at GTi owners.

BUT,

how many problems do we suffer with them?

MAF........

Suspension.......

Leaky rear wiper......

DV......

Not GREAT performance.....

CRAP headlight access.....

Rubbish handling......

FAT car, too fat for a "GTI"

A car that other than being SLIGHTLY lower, and body coloured bumper rub strips and small alloys, looks identical to other golfs......

the list goes on.

was the MK4 GTI pants?

as an owner, i think it was!

and before we get any more of topic comments, i am refereing to the "normal" GTi's......... the 150bhp and even the 115bhp.....maybe even the diesels....as we all know the anni is slightly better, and slighlty different spec.

I was happy with my stock AUQ engined GTI.

180bhp as stock, good brakes - 312mm (for 180bhp), handling was acceptabe (Anniversary suspension).

I've al;so suffered none of the so called standard faults in the two years I have owned it either.

I've had a couple of problems with mine that cost a lot of money to fix but I wouldn't change it. It is part of owning a car, there aren't many cars around that don't have common faults. The gti in standard spec is far from poor.

If it is so 'pants' then why did you spend your money on one?

think every car has its probs , but as we dont own other car we dont no there probs lol

personly i do like my golf even if i have had a few probs with it [:D]

I've had none of the above problems since the car was made in Germany nearly four years ago

FAT car I don't think that is an issue as look at the size of the new MKV GTI, and people love it....

A car that other than being SLIGHTLY lower, and body coloured bumper rub strips and small alloys, looks identical to other golfs......
I do agree with the above, so just mod it the way you want....

"Not great performance and rubbish handling......."

I think that all GTI's are great in there own way as they were made for the consumer trends at that particular age... you have to remember that when the MKIV came out... petrol prices were (still are) high, Insurance premiums suddenly went sky high...

The Golf GTI MKIV was made to appeal to as many people as possible.....to the market that was around at that time...

most if not all hot hatches were down graded, Renault and Ford did not have any hot hatches on the market at one stage.... i.e. the Pug 306 GTI6 (167bhp) engine that was put in the 206 GTI was powered down to 133ish bhp, the handling in the 306 was super great, in the 206 it was like a 4x4, because people did not want/could not afford to run super sporty hatches and people did not want a harsh ride, as the market wanted it like that.

When the hot Hatch market took off again then all the performance and handling went back to the hot hatches i.e clio 182, Civic Type R, Golf V5 170bhp, Anni Golf, diesel 150bhp Golf, Petrol 180bhp Golf, R32 and the new ultra fast MKV....

I guess that if you have suffered the above problems then I might feel differently... but when I placed the order for my car to be built I already knew the performance was not to hot, so that's why I booked it in to be chipped and I had a set of coilovers waiting to be put on once I'd driven it a couple of times...

Please note this is only my opinion

Prior to owning my current GTi, I owned the bog standard 2.0 Gti which I'm not even going to talk about infact, I rarely admit to owning one except for a RTA and I had no choice as my V6 was written off!! [:'(]

I have never suffered any of the listed problems with any of my Golfs...only the rear window regulator and channel trims which are very, very poorly designed by some idiot and the awful windscreen wipers that look like old wire coat hangers (Polo replacement wipers essential!!) ..that's my only grumble!!
