....... the exact car you were looking for, was great to look at, well built & quality materials, reliable, good residuals, great to drive etc etc, and was 25% cheaper than the equivalent German car

Would you buy one??

Could you??

Just trying to see how important a badge really is to people...........

I've got a Daewoo telly - it's great [:D]

So if the same could be said of their cars, then why not?

I used to think Skoda was a really terrible car that I wouldn't touch with a bargepole, but now I quite like them.

U meant Korean didnt you? [:p]

They're still considered as crap even in the far east. If Daewoo got to the standard of Skoda and Seat, then yes I would. No way with Proton though, sounds like a bad 50's B movie.

Its interesting cos my mate use to have a Daewoo Leganza due to the level of equipment he got in the car. He said it was a very good car for the money (he bought it new). He then went from that to a BMW M5. Massive leap. But now hes pulling in the birds, and going out with a glamour model.

If a car was good quality and also had good residuals then it would no longer be crap "badge" image to have it, would it? So I would say yes, providing all the qualities are there

wouldn't go near a Daewoo at the mo tho, christ [8D]

If the car was that good, the there would be not badge snob value as all the snobs would want that car and the marque would be considered a premium brand.

Being honest Mark, its all about branding. Sometimes Branding alone makes or break a company. I think if Skoda was to be renamed right now or had its badge changed, then many more people will take to it. Sometimes even though a company is better now than it was before, no one will ever forget about the history of the company. Some companies (i.e. Seat for instance) fare better than others. Its going to take Skoda a while before people buy it in the masses (actually they do now but you know what I mean). Can you remember on one of these car programs before when the Octvaia was brand new and they covered up all the badges, everyone said they would buy it. But as soon as they found out it was a Skoda, people said different. Such is the world of Branding. Thats why we have a whole list of Branding books now. (jeese Im a geek, been reading all the branding books we publish)

Funnily enough, I now have a friend whose dad works at Skoda and I've been in his Fabia a few times, and honestly, no looks of disgust from anyone.

How do you explain the Skoda prejudice then?

No prejudice for me, they dont make a car which is great to look at, or what I am looking for. If they did, I would buy one.

Fair point. I wonder what would happen if Skoda bought out a stunning looking car?

I don't think Skoda have anywhere near the image that they used to

People who know their cars know VAG motors are much the muchness under the skin, and can pick and choose from many similar cars according to budget

I'm seriously considering a Furby VRs as my next motor, and have no qualms about buying one (or its residuals)

I m8 off mine has worked for Daewoo ever since they came to the north east

One of there biggest let downs was servicing and repairs

But as a whole he says the cars are good for what you get and free servicing and warranty for 5 years

The uk motor industries took a dislike to the Daewoo brand because it was a good car with a good warranty

if you cast your mind back some 20 years ago or longer the motor show at Birmingham was not going to happen because Daewoo where going to attend .

i would say they gave the Uk car industries a kick up the back side

and thanks to them we get 3 year warranties

wouldnt realise but companys such as daewoo and hyundai are massive companys, also mitsubishi..

Hyundai struggled years back, i remember my dad flew to korea and hong kong on buisness for hyundai for the "coupe" years before it was released.

To be fair not a bad manufacturer, people complain about depriciation, but if the car costs ?3000 less in the first place, so what?

I reckon the people at GM/Daewoo have been asking this question seriously, got a resounding "NO" and thats why they decided to scrap the brand and re-brand as Chevrolets.

Interestingly, the only decent Chevrolet they make now is the Corvette, and it is the one which might act as the 'halo' for the rest of the range. However, when it comes to the UK next year it wont be badged as a Chevrolet, just purely as a Corvette. Fair enough I suppose- cant see it sitting comfortably beside a Chevrolet Matiz in the showroom!

You cant have all the chocolate and eat it. If a Daewoo was all that, everyone would have one and the residuals would still be poor as a result....

....ie residuals kinda like Vectras, 607 Peugeots, Citroen C5's, Rover/MG's etc etc
