You need to not rev it more than 2/3 of full throttle for first 500 miles and then gradually increase your rev band up to about 1000 miles,Let it warm up properly and do not let it labour in a high gear at low speeds,Having DSG does not req anything differnt to runing in a manual trans motor.

Once run it you can drive it as normal and enjoy it.

I thought with the new cars it doesn't matter if you don't want to wear
them in as they've been tested before the car has been given to you,
(i.e the engine has been tested at all rev ranges). So you can enjoy
all the performance from day 1.

There is a big difference between testing an engine and running in an engine,If you want your engine to last a long time and not use any oil etc it is best to take it fairly easy for the first 1000 miles , But not too easy It just lets all the moving parts bed in properly.

Also depends if it is diesel or petrol .A diesel engine might take 20,000 or so to start working at full power as the diesel fuel is oily and lengthens the running in process,where as petrol does the opposite.

Also I suppose if you only intend to keep your car for 3 years and then change does it really matter ?

I have known people to buy a new car and not have it serviced at all and then change it after 3 years for a new one.

Thanks guys,

Yes i to have been told about thengins being pre-run in but are sceptical. Its a petrol versions, no real coast advantages with diesel in Australia.

Ill take it easy (going to be hard) for first 1600 KM, may even just leave it in D as it changes reves conservativly but also may labour engine......all this talk cant wait to pick the car up, the buggers make you wait months before delivery (our ones are mane in south africa).

Anyone know wher i can get the operators manual online electronically?

I would advise against leaving it in D if it will make the engine labour at low revs. That is NOT a good way to run the engine in.

Best keep it in semi auto and keep the revs up at 3-4krpm. also don't cruise in a single gear at same revs for too long. drop down a gear make it rev higher for a bit etc.

I don't think Aussie has got his car yet but is keen to get as much info. whilst waiting , as you do !

I don't think the handbook is available as a PDF file on the internet although people often ask.

It needs some kind soul with a few weeks to spare to scan the whole manual onto the net .

I think that applies to specialist engines. I know someone who bought an Integra Type - R and as thats a hand finished engine with finer tolerances he didn't need to run it in. My mums Honda Jazz needs 600 miles (no Vtec either [:(]).

I dont think it matters anywhere near as much as it used to. Unless your planning on keeping the car for say, over 5yrs, then dont worry about it, just drive it how you want to drive it.

I know if i bought a new car and was only keeping it for 2-3yrs, id drive it how i want to from day one.

Exactly what i meant, as it's more of a long term affect, rather than a short term one.

But saying that the bmw m3 m5 have to be weared in as im 99% sure you
have to sign a contract before you accept the car saying that for the
first X amount of miles you will not take it over 4k rpm as this will
mess up the engine in someway [:S] as M-tech engine are very
tempermental and need a good service regime.

Although the engine already has been run in at factory, it does still
need time to "bed in" as someone previously mentioned. Take it easy for
the first 1000km or so, don't use kickdown too much...

It's perfectly alright to leave it in D, though throw it into manual
every now and then to change gears. Avoid going over 4,500RPM,
especially when the engine is cold.

I'd avoid using S mode during the running-in period, since it's overly
aggressive and won't change gears until the extremely high revs.

I'd also avoid using S mode if you want to avoid the police... you'll
notice if you're in D, you can push it into "N" without pushing the
trigger, push it back into D without using the trigger, push it into
manual without the trigger... but you need the trigger if you want to
put it in S!

Take it easy for the first 1000km, and then have fun!

Hi i am a fully trained master tech / Mechanical engineer.

When i worked in the motor trade we were told that the engines in cars were so well machined/built, that they didnt need run in as much as they used to. 200 - 300 miles was fine and that was realy for the brakes and tyres. Course you shouldnt redline it everywhere, but you should never do that even if it had done 10,000miles. Red lining an engine seriousely damages the engine! meaning redline/thrashing all the time. Race engines are designed to be redlined all the time, But they get stripped and serviced after every race!

VW puts the bit in the manual to cover ther backs.

Although the first service is due at 10000miles, one of the best things you can do is to change the oil and filter around 1000-2000 miles. If you do lots of short journeys i would change it every 5000miles.
