From the moment the light came on I managed to stagger 75 miles in the middle of the night, travelling through France. The car must have been running on vapours as it slurped down over 50 litres of diesel once I managed to find a 24hr petrol station.

I keep a very detailed spreadsheet that works out what is left in the tank and then multiplies it by the average MPG on that tankfull and works out my remaining range and how long I've got left when the fuel light comes on. I input data everytime I fill up and so far over 46 fill ups and 23k the average is 72 miles.

Brain, going to 75 miles was indeed cutting it a little fine !!

If you run out of fuel in an oil-burner, don't you have to get it repressurised or something???

Not worth the risk...

Did 20 miles on my 1.8T once, don't like sucking all the rubbish from the botttom of the tank!!

Ive set my petrol light to tell me when i get to half full or half empty depends how you look at it. [:D]

I get about 8 miles after the light if i floor it[:'(]

It actually tells you in the manual for the car, if you can trust it.

As far as I am aware, the tanks are no longer steel, they are plastic, so unless your car is sitting for long period's of time, then for a new car you shouldn't have a load of crap in the bottom of your tank. If you are using it and filling it all the time it will be fine.

In older cars, the tanks rust from the inside and thats where all the dirt and rubbish comes from.

What's all this lark about getting a life ?

I have plenty of other things to do, unlike you petrol lot who spend much much more time at the filling station.

By visiting the filling station more often you lot are also putting your health at risk by making those impulse purchases of a giant Ginsters / Chocolate / Crisps more than I do.

If you don't 'eat' I bet you still yeild and buy a lads / car mag on impulse, more wallet damage for you.

Either way, your beaten and you know it!

Feeble excuses, however witty and clever might make everyone laugh for 5 seconds but it is you, you my petrol burning bretheren that have to live with it.

This is good, we havn't had a .....

Diesel vs Petrol

row for a long time.

Bring it on...

On my way home today I overtook loads of Golfs, all were petrol powered, you lot might be able to go fast but can you afford to, that it the question?

AFAIK there is about 7 litres left in the tank when the light comes on. You should be able to get at least 70 miles out of it unless you drive like you stole it. Modern diesel engines don't need to be primed when run empty, just turn the engine over til it starts.
