I know in the past big sig pics slowed the forum down.

Would removing all sig pics/even avatars and having only very minimum signature text help

At the moment I would rather have a forum without pics than one that is nigh on impossible to use

Its a wonderful forum - but virtually unuseable now as its so impossibly slow even with 1mb broadband. I get so many timed out messages when clicking on a thread. I hate to critisize and not do anything about it but if there is a quickish fix it would be the best car forum on the net by a mile.

Sigs sigs did make a difference though that is why there is now a strict size limitation

It's the database and database access. It just wasn't built to handle such traffic.

the database is SQL so should be able to handle it TBH I think a good move would be to remove the page automatically refreshes function from the front page as that would probably cut alot of unneeded wastage down

The database is SQL...but it's accessed using dynamic SQL instead of stored procedures. The tables are badly indexed (sorry David)...or not at all.

The main sticking points are where it checks who's online and where it checks your PM's everytime you access a page.

Well i decided to turn off sigs in my users prefs (mainly for work), but the forum runs so much quicker now, and much cleaner to look at too.

yep just done it and the forums flying again!!!!!

tested some more in work today and it definetly speeds it up almost immeasurably

Since I've had Firefox, I've never seen any sigs. It's sooo much better, would recommend turning them off, like Chris says quicker and cleaner!
