Dipped beam (H7)
Osram Silverstar (?20 pair) or if you're feeling the need for a whiter light and can go without eating for a week, PIAA Xtreme White Plus (4,000K)

Indicators (581)
Philips Silver Vision or Osram Diadem

Sidelights (W5W)
Philips Blue Vision (approx 3,500K colour temperature) or PIAA Tera white LED (4,500K)

Main beam (H1)
Osram Silver star - though how often do you use the main beam to warrant this?

Buy from www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk or www.powerbulbs.com

Philips now do Blue Vision Ultra which is 4,000K but are much more heavily blue tinted than the PIAA bulbs, and general experience here shows that very heavily tinted bulbs do not last long.

Note that Powerbulbs is giving away the Philips sidelights with certain orders.

Good info there Shiuming [Y]

Nothing really useful to add, but its good to have a list of all the bulb types, and replying puts this thread into "my forums" so i dont have to search for it in future [:p] [:$]

Yes they do, but they still won't match OEM xenons for quality of light output.
Yes your probably right mate and i was looking into the OEM Xenons but
unfortunately they seemed far too expensive. Im sure there is a thread
at the moment talking about them. Your looking at over ?500+ so why not
just make life so much easier and purchase new bulbs for the standard
Volkswagen front lights? Wouldnt mind you explaining this to me!

Just didn't want you to get the wrong idea that a bulb upgrade would make them as good as xenons that's all [:)] Of course it's fine to get some better bulbs for your existing lights, go for it. That's what I did.

you. Thats not the case mate, what i was truely meaning was could you
explain to me why OEMs are so expensive yet people still go for them?
Its puzzled me!

Don't worry mate, that's not at all how I read it [:)] OEM xenons are the best part of ?500 and up on any car, partly it's the bulbs, which on the Golf are over ?100 each! [:S] However, there's simply no doubt that xenons produce a clearer, sharper light that is closer to the colour of daylight than more common halogen filament bulbs.

Thats definately alot of money which i dont think im going to be
willing to spend. Any chance someone could post a picture of OEM Xenons
being used in action? I was wanting to go for a BMW style front light
with the angel eyes going on but i dont know how much that is going to
set me back or if its even possible!

Halfords have got a "Buy one get one free" offer on their own brand Super Brilliance "50% brighter xenon" bulbs, so not bad value if you get a pair of H1s and H7s. The lighting is definitely brighter and more "white". Don't expect miracles but its a good cheap upgrade for the weak standard non-Xenon lights.

I was going to order some Osram Silverstars or Philips VisionPlus on the net until I saw this offer and figured there couldn't be that much difference between all the "+50%" bulbs, that and the prospect of posty dropping the fuckers.

got the osram silverstars, didnt see much difference with them to be honest.

diadems are worth every penny and so are the phillips sidelights.

thanks for the help, much appreciated. all look good in my new anni headlights[:p]

Good stuff [:)]

Sure, the difference between several bulbs all using the same basic technology and physical construction is hard to discern unless you do direct A/B comparisons. The magazine reviews of these bulbs are based on measured results - level of light hitting a kerb at 75m (that's where the +50% comes from, not the level coming out of the bulb). The time it takes to change a bulb is far too long for your senses to accurately remember, a bit like trying to identify the small nuances that differ between sets of hi-fi loudspeakers, for example. By the time you've wired up the next set, you just can't make immediate comparisons of anything less than the blindingly obvious.

When I fitted my PIAA Xtreme White Plus bulbs, I switched on the dipped beams with one different bulb in each side, and there was a clear if not massive difference in colour. I also took photos (with manual identical exposure settings) of both full sets in action.

This is the type of test you have to do to see differences.

I havent checked properly yet m8! I just thought they would be brighter than what they were, but obviously its the distance that would make the difference, and I havent had my headlights adjusted properly yet[:p]

Thanks for the info, and the other 2 bulbs were definetly worth getting anyway.

I recommend powerbulbs aswell, next day delivery off them, spot on[:D]
