1st thing VW electrics are rubbish and cheaply built! My old 21 year Honda is better built.

On my MK4 130 tdi this happened! If the Speedo fails then the electronics in the cluster unit can think the engine is turned off so it drops the fuel needle! Then you hear the bleep for low fuel.

What I did to fix my one took about 2 minutes.

On the six gear box the speed sensor is located at the back of the box just under the gear change cables. I used an 8mm socket and pulled and disconnected the speed sensor. I cleaned off the muck on the sensor and then used a small file and cleaned up terminal points in the Plug, As there is no water seal they had corroded overtime and this was properly why I was having problems!

The speed sensor mite be located somewhere else on other gearboxes, but they all do the same thing! You usually find them somewhere located near the flywheel/Diff.

After checking the fuses once again I found it was a faulty fuse that was causing the speedo not too work and the fuel gauge to act strange. Deffo worth looking at before you try garages or other expensive sensors etc

Just glad I got it sorted

I would still check the Sensor and plug terminal pins as earthing out could of caused the fuse to blow!

Hi

I have had the same problem with my 53 plate GTTDI 130

Speedo not working, fuel light coming on and off and beeping randomly, reverse lights not working.

I found if you disconnect and remove the air box unit, you can gain access to the gearbox speed sensor without removing battery and casing etc..

The speed sensor is located right on the back of the gearbox below the gear change cables and hidden under a small silver heatproof cover. If you carefully remove the elecrical connection to the sensor you can then slide the sensor out from the gearbox clean up the sensor and any corroded connections within the plug then refit.

I also checked the wiring leading to the sensor(3 wires, brown, blue n white, black n white) for any damage before refitting all components and replacing the blown fuse.

Hello All!!!

I am new on this forum and replying after log gap on this discussion.

I have Octavia 2003 Model and has a same problem.

Fuel gauge is going up and down,Speedo not Working and Car jerks /jumps badly after gear change at 1200-1700 RPM.

Checked and took out the sensor cap and checked if the gearbox and sensor rods are connected, i did the test and sensor rod been moved by the gearbox.

Checked all Connections under battery and fuses and they are fine, i can get the voltage in plug connected, did the LED test and my wiring/Instrument cluster is fine.

My tests results are pointing to bad sensor.

I replaced the complete Clutch including DMF (LuK) and after that this problem arised.

My question is how clutch replacement affected speed sensor on gearbox?

Is there any way to check the sensor ? i mean voltage or resistance check between 3 pins on the sensor plug.

If sensor is really faulty how can i get it? i searched Ebay and lots of sites but i couldn't find one.

here are the codes written on sensor.

PA6.6-GF30

ATW VW 602 170 191919149E

12V DE 41MP

Any help in this regard would be Much Appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,

hi guys, just wondering maybe someone had the same problem as me....

my speedo is not working and fuel gauge is playing up while driving, it starts beeping and asks me to put more fuel on...by the way mpg and outside temperature gauge shows not the right stuff....but the rpm and engine temperature gauge works fine...

maybe it might be the gearbox sensor fault?

thanks

L70se and nickturbo, checked my fuses and yes that`s true that one 10amp fuse was blown...anyway changed the fuse and tryed to have ago but speedo was not working anyway...stopped and checked again the same fuse blown again...so I think there is no problem with any sensors I hink something wrong with the loom somewhere...? any clues?under the battery?
Had the same issue, Turned out to be a blown 10amp fuse .
