Hi guys, just wondering maybe someone had the same problem as me...

My speedo is not working and fuel gauge is playing up while driving, it starts beeping and asks me to put more fuel on... by the way mpg and outside temperature gauge shows not the right stuff... but the rpm and engine temperature gauge works fine...

Maybe it might be the gearbox sensor fault?

thanks

Did you fix this? Was it the speedo (gearbox) sensor?

My speedo needle started bouncing around this morning on the way to work, all other readings seem to be normal (no beeping telling me to put fuel in) and trip counter still racking up the miles.......

Does this sound like typical symptoms of the speedo sensor?

Bump.....

On the way home, my mpg was showing as being really poor and fuel gauge was dropping like a stone (must be what it's like to drive an R32....[:S]) and beeping at me telling me to refuel (and it felt sluggish too)

speedo sensor ? ?

hi there...still driving with the same problem, but I went to vw dealer to ask and they said on mk4`s there is a distance sensor in dash and a some kind of sensor in the main gearbox...anyway the etka showed us a two type of sensors(two different part numbers) of my golf so I need to take the clocks out take the old sensor out, then order a new one and I hope it will be ok...

I have a day off finally tomorrow I`m gonna take the speedo out, order a new distance sensor(it will take about two working days to get it from dealer) and hope it will be oik again... I will update it...if it was a distance sensor fault...

No worries GIN / Mak30176 - keep the thread going with any updates. Mine's going into the garage on Monday, I know them pretty well and said (after reading around on the forum) that it's most likely the speedo sensor (didn't know about the one behind the clocks.......)

They'll change that and it should hopefully clear the proble. Will keep you posted !

Cheers for the replies fellas

I had the same problem... speedo would bounce around and every time I turned left the fuel gauge would go down to zero and beep low fuel... quite annoying! I ended up replacing the gearbox speed sensor which didn't help so I decided to send it to www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk ... they bench tested it and found both faults. It cost me £100+ I think inc courier although if you have vagcom it probably would be a lot cheaper to get another cluster off ebay

ok.

Had this problem a while ago, before you spend any money on sensors or the like try this.

Under the battery tray in the engine (you will need to remove battery and tray) there is a wire mounted to the chassis. This can sometimes rust/corrode due to water/battery fluid causing a bad connection. If you disconnect it and give the area a good cleaning or rub down with fine sand paper then reconnect this could sort your problem. Was told to do this by an engineer at Loughton VW before he would sell me a sensor.

Hope this helps mate.

Which fuse was the one that had blown? (fuse number?) I've just got my car back from the garage, their stockist didn't have the 6 speed sensor, so they're getting it tomorrow (will have to be fit on Saturday now)

I've just had a quick look at some of the 10 amp fuses and they all seem fine.... so to narrow it down (as there seem to be loads of 10 amp ones) whats the number to give me somewhere to start.

Cheers

sidhee73...the fuse number 7, it`s the 10 amp if you gonna look from the left bottom third one...and the picture shows a book on it...by the way so what the garage said to you is it definitely the distance sensor which connects to the speedo?is it pd diesel yours 6 speed manual?

L70Se I took the battery tray out this morning and I saw some wires but couldn`t see anything wrong...so I think will need to go to see the local guy who is dealing vw...but 1 hour of job it`s 60£....!!! and I just imagine how much dealer would take....
