At some point this year I am hoping to buy a new car. I'm not doing a lot of miles any more so I don't really need a diesel and fancy a bit more fun.

I really want a 350Z - been looking at the '06 facelifted model or possibly '07 with the more powerful engine but I don't want to pay much over £16-17k.

However the tax is £430 a year from this year which is a big hit and I can't see any new government changing that. Fuel costs are likely to rise so getting 20mpg is not going to be much fun. The roads around here have been horrendous this winter and I wouldn't want to stick the car in a ditch so would probably have to go onto snow tyres.

Having said that I'm only planning on having the car for 1-2 years and then hopefully getting a Scirocco R.

So is there a reasonable alternative to a 350z that will provide some fun and be slightly cheaper to run?

Cheers for that, I'd tried a search but only came up with 4 more expensive cars. I'd used 335 as a keyword.

So I've had a look through and there's actually hardly any 335D's certainly not that I want to pay for. Looking at it too it just doesn't float my boat really. It's just not exciting.

So any other cars to consider?

How could a Chrysler diesel estate be seen as a fun car to drive? The rest I can understand but that makes no sense to me [:S]

What's disappointing about a Boxster? I've never driven one so have no idea. However looking at the tax band and mpg it would be no different to the 350z which I'm sure would be considerably more entertaining.

Nik what is it you don't like about the 350z? Especially as you'd consider a Chrysler.

The big french bit under the bonnet is what puts me off and I'm not overly struck on the styling, BMW got it right with the "flame surface" styling imho, the nissan just doesn't do it for me.

300C 215bhp before a remap and 270 after should make it some fun, plus it looks mean [6] I love a mean estate too so may be slightly biased.

Test drove a 3.2 boxster last year and was completely and utterly disappointed, it wasn't quick, was uncomfy and just wasn't special enough for the money basically just paying for the Porsche badge.

I'd be looking for a nice clean Evo 8 for that kind of money.
I saw 2 of these on Sunday and I really quite liked the look of them, I'd never even considered one before so it's definitely on the list.
