Thanks for the info!

I?m thinking of adding these lights to my 1.6 SE MK5 Golf as it currently does not have fog lights (which I believe takes away from the appearance of the car).

Any opinions?

Pictures look great on the Hella site

I?m hoping this option will be considerably cheaper than retro fitting fog lights.

PS does anyone know if the lighting system is illegal in the UK?

Do you think it would be a big job to replace my fogs with this kit?

I like me fogs but cant use then in fear of getting pulled up for it, be sides did I read correctly that these lights will switch on with the side lights?

Do I here a group buy coming up?

If I read the stuff on the Hella site correctly, these lights come on with the ignition and then turn OFF when you turn to dipped beam....

Be interesting to see if it works ok with the canbus system if you've got the "auto lights on" feature on your MKV...

However, I can't see the point myself. If you need to be seen, then why not turn your lights on??

You could retrofit any type of fog light in the space for them on the MKV and indeed Hella and others do many sorts that would look great. If I were doing that though, I would also get the new light switch for inside the car and wire it up to that to keep it OEM looking. The wiring should be simple enough to run in...Aren't the OEM fogs about ?50 a side? Give VAG Parts a ring or something.

In either case, it looks like you would also need two grille vents with the cutout for the fogs, unless they're included with the kit, and you might need other bits for mounting. The grille vents I know from a collision with a pheasant (very tasty!) are about ?15 each.

Also, as others have mentioned, I think you'd get flashed by other road users and pulled over by the feds quite frequently if you had these on! It might get tiresome trying to explain to a copper what "daytime running lights" are, and you might still be asked to produce all your docs whilst they check on construction and use regulations!

Just my 2p...

It want matter it you get pulled up, the hellas are day time lights so your not braking the law.

If I drive with my fogs on even when its sunny I can get charged.

It all to do with the brightness of the bulb. I don't care if I get pulled up by the police if I know am in the right and am to scared to drive around with fogs on!

The more I think about the Hella lights I am beginning to wonder how easy it would be to do a complete fog light retro fit inclusive of a new internal switch?

Is the wiring loom complete for this procedure?

That's the point John, the position of these "Daytime Running" lights (Surely the most pointless "innovation" anyway since automatic rain sensing wipers... "Oh, I'm a bit worried about people being able to see me, good job I've got these two little lights shining away on my front bumper rather than using my headlights....") are exactly the same as fogs. Therefore, you are at risk of looking like a plonker anyway! [;)]

Also, sad to say, most traffic cops wouldn't know the difference either and although you'd be in "the right", personally the risks of looking like a plonker and the potential inconvenience of getting pulled over just make them not worth the hassle!

I don't use my fogs, unless it's really foggy of course, but they do fill a space on the bumper. Bit expensive for that though!

Volvos use daytime running lights, so what is the problem? Beter than using fogs when you shouldn't do like the Chav brigade.....and look a total plonker!

There is nothing wrong with using lights during the day, in fact I use my lights a lot during the day having a black car.

It's more the position of those in that it is the recognised fog lamp position could lead to grief.

If you want lights during the day just use your lights [;)]

If anyone is thinking of retro fitting fogs, there is a new pair complete with the grilles available on German ebay. Bidding is up to ?40 at the moment with 6 hours to go. Could be a bargain and seller will post to countries outside Germany.
