hi all.

my heater has started playing up. when i put it on the 4th speed it is slowing down and stoping then suddenly it will start blowing again.

ive been told that it just might be a resistor

has anyone else had any probs like this before.

cheers rob

yup i have been having this similar problem with my climatronic...unsure what it is. most time it works perfect, rarely it goes off and doesnt work, when i go over a bump it starts working again.

Im suspecting something is loose but have no idea where to look.....
iv been looking it2 it on here and aparently if you take your glove box out the thats where the heater motor is . with yours been clamatronic it will be ebay item number 150534709880. if not it will be same as mine witch is ebay item 380196795916. just double check with the part number on it.

im going to have a look at mine today so il let you know how i get on. my plan is too take the glovebox out then ther should be 3bolts/studs that hold the resistor top on. i dont no if there is 1 or 2 resistors on it. im guna get the part number off then put it back together till the new 1 comes as a little heat is better than naff all in this weater lol

im gessin the motor works like a grinder and ther are 2 bushes / resistors on them (one on each side) and if they wear down and dont make contact with the motor then the grinder dont work or it acts like the simtoms we are gettin (on n off) all the time

il let you know how i get on mate
brilliant info!!!!!

Keep us updated to how it goes pal. I tried taking the glove box out but couldnt figure out how it comes out so i quickly gave up lol....
put a new heater motor in today and its still the same.

havent got a clue what to do next.

the bushes what i got told about are inside the motor which is a sealed unit hence thats why i replaced the full lot
Mines started working again, and not gone worng for over a week. Just waiting for it to go wrong again so i can show it someone. Would rather have it fixed than it going wrong it this weather.
Its stopped working again. When i get a chance this week will be taking it to a vw specialist for him to check it over.
sorry. forgot to update you.

i ended up buying a brand new motor and its fine now. i must of bought a dud second hand 1 off ebay thats why it was same as before.

i didnt get a vw 1 tho, they wanted £130 for 1 so just got a new 1 off ebay for £49
I might have to try that aswell, just need to figure out how to take the glove box out, then go ahead to investigate properly.

All electrics have kind of started playing up, heater problems, then rear passenger side door only opens/unlocks when it wants to rarely, otherwise always stays locked and never opens. And same with the boot...+5 years of trouble free motoring in this car and now electrics are playing up...
Hi,

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have a '98 GT Tdi which is experiencing similar problems!

It just has a 1/2/3/4 heater/blower with no AC or climate control, but just seems to switch on and off randomly and at various speeds when it chooses (like when driving round a bend sometimes!) The dials have never lit up either.

Does it sound like I need a new heater motor or resistor? If so, what do I need and where do I find it in the car?

Thanks very much for the help!

thats what i ended up getting mate. i tryed two secondhand ones and they both diddnt work. i put that on and it works as new now. its a new fan unit for just over fifth quid and vw wanted 120 for 1 so i got that. it is at the back of the glovebox.

; take the glovebox out with the 3 screws at top and 3 screws at bottom and that will revivel it. unplug your glovebox light and take the glovebox out of the way, its easyer. then unplug the motor in 2 places. 1st the main plug thats infront of you then stick your hand undernieth and you will find another. then take the rubber cover off the back of the motor with the 3 phillips screws facing you, then undernieth you will find 2 8 or 10mm little screws. take them out and the resistor tray will come off the bottom and the heater motor will slide down. reverse to refit. when i recived the new motor i saw it had a different conector too mine in my car so all i did was got 2 5inch long bits of normal electric wire and fitted both ends of both wires with 4 female spade clips, pluged tham straight to the original conector on my car then into the male terminals on the back of the new motor.

it was easy realy then bobs your teapot.... your heater is fixed. hope this helps. any more probs mate just ask

Awesome reply mate, that's great news! I'll jump on FleaBay now and pick one up!

I searched on here for my unlit dial issue too and replaced the tiny single bulb behind the fan speed dial. Good as new now!

Unfortunately these are just the start of a reasonably long and expensive looking list of gripes with my new whip...!
Thank you so much for posting this. just fitted myself a new heater motor with your brilliant instructions and now at last i have heat [:D]
