A previous post has reminded me about rear towing eye covers!

My 98S plate 1.6S which i had brand new had one but...

My 51 plate GTTDI which i also had brand new didnt?????

Ive seen several cars of all sorts of ages with and without them.

Any one know whats the score.

Another thing that my GTTDI didnt have that my 1.6S had was

a rubber coin holder down by the handbrake?!

Yes to the tow bar cover no to the coin holder - probably because the GT TDI has the front arm rest.

i have a 1.6SE 98

it has a towing eye cover and the rubber coin holder thing.

NETDI its not related to the arm rest as i have one of them too. its a rubber insert near the handbrake. if you dont have it there will just be a (approx) 12cm x 3cm gap there.

not got one on mine! prob from when it was resprayed by the previous keeper. God knows what happened to the car mind!!

didnt have a coin holder until i bought a new one from VW and then found the original under the passenger seat, so i have a spare one! only cost a few ???

I have both, but in fairness cars tend to lose them. The Tow covers are usually removed by scum or drunk people, or alternatively fall off, whereas the coin holder (a small rubber mat similar to those in your door pockets) can sometimes be removed by previous owners to make the storage slot a little bigger. Tow covers were standard on all cars, but I have been told that the coin holders only cam as standard on se models and above. I dont know if thats true!

I have both on my 99 Gti but had to replace my towing eye cover from when I parked at Gatwick Airport car park some body nicked mine, but like you say it is pence and makes a difference to the rear

The rubber coin tray thing got deleted from MY2001, along with cupholders on certain models. Must have been the beancounters...

Probably cost VW more in wages for the meeting they had to discuss removing the items than they saved in production costs... []
