hey

first off my revo'd 130 is not as quick as a CTR but i did find some of its weaknesses. [:D]

started drving behind and continued to for about 8miles. the owner soon realised that i was not a slow driver and started to have a play. if i didnt know he was accellerting and caught out then the turbo lag i had, would give him a good head start. however, if we were exiting a 30mph limit both at 30 and i anticipated him then i would be able to keep up with him on the the 30-50 bits. i could out brake him into the corners and pull the car out equally well between 20-50mph. things started to hot up and he bagan to push the ctr quite hard around corners. providing i was smooth in the wet conditions the konis and santas kept the golf very stable. plus the little lift off over steer around a roundabout certainly was fun. at this point i will add that we were not racing, nor as dangerously as some people on this forum may try and say.

now the 0-$$$mph comparison.

we both pulled off a junction fron standstill onto a duel carriage way.i was two car lengths behind him , he struggled to get traction and wheel span thru the first two gears, i kept my start concise and got as much torque into the soaking wet tarmac as i could. upto to 30mph i had the edge. between 30-50 it was equal. 50-70 he pulled away, i stopped at 70 cos i dont speed, by that time it was 5 or six car lengths ahead pulling away cos unlike the tdi his vvt kicks in. just thought u liked to hear the comparison. if i had an s3 i think in the wet it would be a different story with the quittro. anyway if ur still reading well done.[:D]

Haha Ian, good write-up.

Every so often I bump into a CTR guy I know on the uncrowded stretch of dual carriageway I commute on, and we have a little dice-up, followed by a phone call at work of the old diesel:petrol p-take variety!

With my old PD130 I found that it was pretty even, but like you say it depends on gearing and power delivery as to who will have the edge. Once rolling, I was able to keep up with him at all times. When we got onto a section of dual carriageway at say 30mph and both floored it, he did pull away a few lengths but was by this stage well into 3 figures. When following me he has always been unable to overtake.

He hasn't really sampled a PD150 humiliation yet. It is quicker.

Glad to hear you don't speed (on the ground anyway[:D])

when i had my play with one i noticed up to 40 i closed in a little on him and then to 100 the gap stayed the same, no gaining no losing. we came to a corner we both had to slow right down, he went round corner and i could see him lift off like a shot, i floored mine gained a car length and then even again to the 100mph.

funny comparison this as the V-TEC will be kicking in just as the tdi runs out of puff

i had a race with one in my GSI and it was neck and neck up to about 70 ish then i started to pull away from him slightly

all depends on the driver as well

its all to do with gearing, third gear on the " v tech" 60mph to 80mph is 6000rpm to 8000rpm (redline) when i reach 80 in the tdi in third im approaching the redline, which i have power all the way to, so why isnt it a good comparison? so when the tdi runs out of puff in third so is the vtech in third at the same speed approx

its all bull about running out of "puff" the only difference is the petrol engine is spinning faster than the TDI for a given speed.

if the tdi was running out of puff i would not have been able to keep up with him, but i did.

the tdi is geared way higher so it doesnt need 8000rpms

i am sorry if my write up has upset some people.i was just posting my honest views and thoughts, isnt what uk-mkivs is all about. imo i dont think i was bragging about what i achieved or described how to race and beat a ctr, ur right the ctr is standard and my isnt. does that mean i am only allowed to write about other modded cars, i could nt do that cos most other tuned cars are quikcer than my tdi, tommorrow i will be test driving the new gti. i will give a write up and my views on the car. countless other people have written up on it, i hope i dont get slated for writting yet another review, to be honest the only place i feel happy is flying over a road at 500mph and not driving along it! i get less hassle that way.

Think you got the wrong end of the stick ian. I don't believe any negativity was meant to your post. The thing is that people often compare cars against others on the road, but it is never a fair comparison.

As I mentioned, a drag strip or track would really show differences. [^]
