Just been over to Oxford this morning, and guess what I come up behind on the way! A Maclaren F1!! It was P reg, and in an abosolutely HORRIBLE flat PLUM colour!

I overtook a couple of cars, then noticed it two cars ahead, saw a gap to carry on overtaking, and got on with it, BUT as I got past the first car, the Maclaren suddenly pops out and shots off! I got in behind it, he was having a real go at getting past stuff, but anything he could do, so cound I! I could sense he was getting a bit miffed so I did not hassle him, kept my distance and jsut made progress. The noise it made as it accelerated was excellent!

Anyway, after about 5 miles of this point and squirt stuff, I realised we were coming to a bit of road that is on a gentle left hander, with great views over the hedge on the inside, to see if the road is clear. But you have to stay well back t get a view past any traffic you are following! So F1 boy is stuck rightup this lorry's jacksey, and can see nowt but the tail lift! I am about 100yrds back, looking looking looing, right its clear, nailed it in 2nd and just as we come off the bend I doing about 40mph faster than him and th truck, and sailed past both of em! It took him a while to get by, by which time I had nipped past another car. Cos of the traffic he could not get in behind me, always one car back! LOL

I know its a bit childish, but it was all very safe and very much made my morning!! Even better than the DB9 that could not shake us off the other week, and who eventually gave up trying!

But not as good as the 911 turbo I managed to do exactly the same manoeveure on about 4 years ago, in a 1.25litre fiesta courtesy car, in exactly the same place!! (He was with his bird too!!LOL!)

Its great when you ust know the roads that little bit better!!

BTW, I know you could buy them F1s in ANY colur you wanted, but this was real horrid! It cant have even looked nice in 1996!

in my top 3 favourite cars i have to admit, and used to see one quite regulary in the town i live until the owner crashed it into a tree at over 140mph and killed himself and his 2 passengers,it was a right mess the car,the engine was over 100yards up the road.

a friend of mine is a retained Fire Fighter and i have seen all the pictures taken by them and the police for the investigation,an eye opener i will say.

No I was in the 4, but I'd have got him in the 2 too!!

I still cannot get over how drab the car looked though, it was not a pearly colour, just a glos, flat plum purple! Sort of Aubergine! YUK!

HAha!! I reckon I have found its details! Check out car #41, Dark Burgundy 1997!! It was P reg, and the only other purple one thay made was in 1994 and it was Pearl!

I never realised there was only 64 made!

Well I look at it like this, I've never been smoked by a Maclaren F1 yet, but he's now been done over by a 1.8T!!!!LOL

*meanwhile back on planet earth*

PMSL

No wonder the guy in the F1 couldn't get by the truck. He was too close and he sits in the middle. Daft sod couldn't see past the thing.

Exactly! He really was shuvved right up its jaksey, like not even 10 yrds away! (Why do people do that, you cannot see ANYTHING!)

Its the syndrome of a most people that can afford these cars cant or dont wanna use them to even a third of their potetial! (And at ?300k a shot, you cannot realy blame them!). At least one guy with a Maclaren did'nt really know its capabilities judging by wrightyrs's post above. Well that's one out of 64 owners at least!!!

But apart form the colour being truly awful, it was an amazing piece of kit to see in the flesh, and the noise was something else. I was also surprised just how small it looked on the road, not like most superdupercars.

Go on a few track days in a decent hot hatch and note how many TVRs Porches and Ferraris are holding you up! Not all of them, but most of them in my experience. It is quite rare to find the exotica really showing its stuff on track, mind you its fun when they do!

I overtook a Jag SJ220 in my 2CV years ago. I think perhaps it wasn't trying?

Don't take this as an insult but maybe if I was driving a car worth hundreds of thousands of pounds I'd let some maniac in a MKIV get on with it as well.

Please don't tell me you you think your MKIV can keep up with an F1: quote "anything he could do, so cound I!". Unless of course you've managed a power weight ratio of 560 bhp/ton. How about 0-60 in 3.2 seconds or 0-100 in 6.3 as well as a top speed in excess of 240mph. Awesome numbers. I think perhaps he wasn't trying or only passed his test last week.

THat was a famous case, the guy was young an IT millionaire who had some dodgy connections and rumours about big time drug dealing dogged him. I remeber seeing the pictures in the papers, all that was left were expensive looking tiny pieces of carbon fibre.

Note to self: avoid hitting trees.

With you on that one Cat![:(]MY God, what's wrong with you guys!? ........All the power to weight is useless if you dont know how to use it or if you cannot use it. And lets face it, you cannot really use that sort of oomph in your average traffciked up road situation, can you! Remember this was in traffic, and yes, any "overtake" he did, I was able to do also, hence I came from many cars back, got in behind him and eventually overtook him. Yes, they are amazingly awesome cars- that's why I posted about this incident, I have never seen or heard one actually moving before, so it was pretty unusual, that's all.

Oh, and if he wasn't trying why did he suddenly pull out in front of me as I was overtaking the car behind him, and go off up the road at approx 130mph!? Ditto, if he wanted to let a "maniac in a MKiv" go on his way, why didn't he!? And once past him, we both went past at least 15 cars until he tunred off. I'm not sure this is the actions of someone letting the "maniac" get on with it..??? In fact fair play to the guy, I like to think if I had the cash to blow on such a car, I would not mess bout at 60mph in it all day, and I'd probably enjoy playing wih the odd quick car out there too.

You do not know me, but I can assure I am no maniac, I drive 35000 miles a year, have a clean licence and never had an accident in 18 years driving cars and bikes on the road and track! I can't be all that bad a driver!

Of course I do not think any mkiv can keep up with a Maclaren F1 in a straight line! If it could it would be a very interesting post, would it? The guy was having a bit of a go, and just pretty much just got "outfoxed" by someone who knew the road a little better, and knew exactly what his car can and cannot do! That's all. It was just a bit of fun!

And if anyone else had had the same experience, I would expect them to post about it here too. Enjoying our cars, std modded or otherwise is what its all about. This is a MKiv golf enthusiasts forum, lest we all forget.

Now, don't YOU take this as an insult, but a 2 CV.......?!?! "What on earth were you thinking!!"" LOL LOL! Trees are bad news, but at least you have an anni around you now, not a 2cv! My best mate's dad had a citroen garage when we were all 17, and he had a 2cv, while we all had POLO's and fiestas! He crashed that thing so many times just trying to keep up with "1300 POLO Ranger power". His dad just kept putting 2nd hand panels on it to keep it running. After about a year, it loked like one of them Benneton POLOs! LOL Ahh, the good old days!
