I've just spotted that drivethedeal.com are now selling the MkV GTI for 17,864 (base 3dr) [:O] This can't be right can it?

I've already ordered one through my local stealer and paid a 500 quid deposit! So what should I do now? Should I cancel the order and re-order with drivethedeal - can I do that and and will I loose my deposit? Should I go back to the dealer and try and re-negotiate armed with this new info? or should I just stay as I am? The thing is, if I cancel and do loose my deposit I will still save 1K, but it's all a bit risky ordering over the net so I just don't know what to do!!!

I spoke to the guys at uknewcars.com yesterday, about a new A4 for someone in my family, and noticed they'd pushed their discount on the Mk5 further this week. I asked about the GTI and they mentioned that the discount will be about the same as the rest of the range - 10-12%.

19995 / 1.12 = 17852, so the price you quoted is roughly 11.9% discount.

For the sake of ?1,000 I'd stick with the dealers. At least they're handy if anything goes wrong on delivery etc. Whats a ?1000 over the average four year finance deal? Maybe an extra ?25 a month or something like that?

Does anyone have any experience of using drivethedeal.com though?

Yeah, that was knida my thoughts but 1,000 quid is a 1,000 quid - or to put it another way, I can get it with 18" wheels & xenons for the same price!

I've got experience of buying 2 cars through drive the deal, and I have to say it was excellent.

Don't forget they only supply UK cars through the official franchised network, so you still get all the backup from your local VW garage.

I got my latest car, a Golf V, through Virgin Cars but only because they had the colour I wanted! Otherwise, I would have used them.

The car's from drive the deal were supplied by a big franchise in Surrey (Renault), and my Golf came from Reg Vardy VW in LE. They do all of the PDI stuff etc.

The only thing that you might not like, is that the car may be registered in the first instance to a fleet company or suchlike, but thats not always the case - ask them.

My Golf was only registered after I'd agreed to buy it, so I also got the full 3 year warranty.

With drive the deal, you don't buy "over the net" as such, but you speak to a real person over the phone and give them a ?500 deposit if you want to buy. You then deal with the supplying dealer who deliver to your door if required.

I don't work for either of the companies above by the way, I'm just somebody who got fed up being patronised and ripped off by the dealer network and found that these companies meant I didn't have to haggle with dealers, and also saved myself a few thousand into the bargain!!

Same here mate, my eyes have been opened to the world of brokers! [:)] I've had excellent service and a nice big discount [:D]

Looking into ordering a new shape Audi A4 2.0 TDI S-Line right now with 9.5% off - the car hasn't even debuted yet! hehe [^]

Personally, I would go back to your dealer and tell em about the drive the deal price.

If, as I expect they will, they say "tough mate, you've ordered it and stuck with it" etc, then I would confirm...

1. That the price at drive the deal is correct, and that they can guarantee getting hold of one with your Xenons etc

2. Check that you can cancel the deal with your dealer, and that all you would lose is the ?500

3. Order the drive the deal car!

But that's me! Good luck with whatever you decide.

Either way, you'll end up with a GTI, which can't be bad!

Yeah, I think that's pretty much what I thought too. I'll speak to the my dealer tonight to tell them about the drivethedeal price and that I'm thinking of cancelling the order. Hopefully they may offer me some discount but, as you say, they'll probably just say "tough"! Then I'll start looking seriously into buying it from drivethedeal.

Let us know how it goes as I am also interested in this, VW uk just don't seem to know what they are doing with the GTi. I ordered mine because at that time it first come first served, but now they are delaying the car because I want 18's till January production then it does not seem to make a difference when you ordered it.

I might do the same as you.

Well I've just spoke to my dealer and he wasn't too happy to say the least! Basically he wouldn't budge, he said there was no way they could discount a GTI and we'd should on a deal anyway. He was pretty poo pooty about it really. He then went on to say that VW had strict controls on what price they could sell the GTI at doubted drivethedeal could be selling them with a 10% discount at all (but then he would say that wouldn't he!). I'll ring drivethedeal and see what they say.

Snotty Dealer!

Discounts are out there on GTI. Drive the deal do sould exceptional, and VW will soon know what dealer is doing the discounts.

But tell your dealer, Discount or no Deal

I've just spoke to drivethedeal and explained my position. Their reply was basically to stay as I am with my local dealer, as they didn't know when delivery would be (could only say "early next year"). Not quite the response I was expecting but I guess that's what I'll do! (tho I think I'd pretty much decided to do that anyway)

drivethedeal are fine, its the dealers that they put you onto that can be the trouble. If anyone does order from them and they tell you its coming from VW Specialist cars in Aberdeen, tell them to choose someone else. My first GT TDI came needing two new doors!! Only the kindly intervention of Autotrader managed to get me my money back, they had several complaints all about the same thing from the same dealer! Drivethedeal then said my local dealer, Fairways in Preston, were on their books since my original order so I asked them to get me one from there and I didn't look back. They have been great and I haven't had a problem with the car yet (touch wood). I placed my original order at the beginning of Feb and got a trouble free car on 24th Sept. Nearly as long a wait as you guys will have for your GTI's [:)]
