1st car - A bag of nails AKA Pug 306

Posted Image

Around 4 weeks after passing my test I then bought my bootyful Golf, used from my local VW dealer

This was a superb car. Had it for two years and it never let me down. I think the worst repair it ever needed was a new exhaust.

Sadly after a few issues with a shoddy Volkswagen bodyshop that were attempting to carry out a bodywork warranty repair, I decided to part with the Golf.

Sticking with German I bought a BMW E46 - Same age and mileage (50k 03plate) as what the Golf was.

This was the beginning of my demise.

In the year I owned it not a month went by without it needing a trip to the garage. New sensors galore, brake tubes, seals... the list was endless.

At UNDER 80k miles the engine in the BMW decided to throw a little paddy and ate its timing chain. Once it had eaten the timing chain the rest of the engine followed suit and pretty much self destructed.

This is the dirty black little lemon being towed away the morning it died....

So. I was now in a bit of a pickle. The car already owed me more than what it was worth given the money I had poured into it over the year, and I really couldnt justify spending yet more money on a major engine rebuild or a new engine.

So I washed my hands of it and sold it as it was (for a slight loss may I add) [cry]

My wallet now needed a little respite away from the constant repair bills and detailing habbits I had grown used to.

So remembering how reliable my lovely lovely Golf was, I parted with £420 and bought Peter AKA Thunderturd....

He had around 155k on the clock when I first got him, and I've been hammering the mileage on since.

He looks like a bag of sh#t, but mechanics wise he is quite sound... recent exhaust, brakes, tyres, timing belt, water pump, and full service.

He also has a few luxury extras, such as electric windows and....

VW limited edition racing alloys

A propper mint sound system

Top notch intruder alarm (the jagged rust slashes would-be robbers to a bloody pulp)

And (I've saved the best for last)... A highly detailed engine bay housing a turbo charged V12

So far ownership of Thunderturd / Peter has been quite nice.

I clean it when I cant see out of the windows any more or if there have been sightings of rats, I park as close as I can to the supermarket doors, I can bash my doors off walls and bollards when getting out of the car and it looks no worse (actually, the black scrape on the passanger side of the rear bumper is from me attacking a barrier in the snow) and I just generally dont care about it.

Repairs wise it hasnt cost me much so far. The indicator stalk and rear wiper motor broke, but I got replacements uber cheap from ebay.

The antenna base seal was a bit pooped, so I pulled it off and smeared some silicone sealant around the base.

Oh and the drivers door lock needed a new spring.

The only problem I'm having at current is the Hammerite not living upto its promises of 5 year rust protection.

I bought a spray can and attacked the rust with it, but as you can see not even 5 months later and the rust is coming back....

So yeah. I drive round with my hood up so that people dont see me in him, but secretly, I love him!

I'm intending to get my moneys worth out of him for the time being, and then once there is no life left in his poor little wheels I think I'm going to look at getting a MK4 cabriolet (something along the lines of a Colour Concept one), or possibly a mint MK3 GTI.

So thats how things stand as of 05/01/2011

This is going to be my little buildy type thread now, so any updates / changes of car / changes to Thunderturd will be posted in here!

Watch this space eh...

Aww, jeez Matt - remember reading what you went through with the Golf to get the corrosion sorted, and now the Beemer's coughed it...

Sorry to hear your bad luck - that BMW did look spanking though.

Have a soft spot for these Polo 6n's myself - my sis has a 16v version. Has had a few faults (usual VW - door locks, window mechs) but still sounds good, and bar the dents, still a fairly tough little car.

Can see how you've been keen to run a ratter as a daily to cut out the cost & worry - tempted to do the same myself at times!

Yeah, I'm really liking the rat look at the moment. Not because of the way it looks, just simply because I cant be bothered to care for and look after a car after the luck I've had with the last two.

I'm developing a soft spot for the Polo 6n's too.... its a simple little beast that just seems to keep on going and takes whatever I throw at it. I was playing bouncy castles on the bonnet not too long ago [A] (long story)

Its quite annoying actually that I can jump on the bonnet of my sh!tty Polo and not leave a mark, but if I did so much as brush up against the BMW I'd of ended up with a scratch in the paint.

Come the summer time I'll be missing air conditioning like crazy though!

Just taken ThunderTurd for his MOT.

Wasnt due till 8th Feb but thought I'd get it out the way now....

AAAANNNNNDDDDDDD.... IT PASSED!!!!!!!

Only one advisory and that was on a 'worn rear wheel bearing', but he said there was 'only very slight play' and it isnt making any noise, so I'll ignore it for the time being [clap]

Over the moon I am, my £420 banger is turning out to be a little beast [H]

ThunderTurd is getting replaced!!!!

I've decided that as much as I love him, I can't deal with the scruffyness any more.

Soooo... bearing how well he is wearing, and how fond I've grown of him, I'm going to get a newer Polo!

Looking for another 6n, but the facelift one, as they dont seem to rust.

So the needs areeeee..... 1.4 petrol, 3 door, electric windows, heated mirrors, alloy wheels, low mileage (pref around 60k), and ideally front fog lights and air-con.

I've seen one that is perfect, but I'm not looking at buying till next month, so I doubt it still be for sale [:(] Here it is anyway though....
