As some of you may know I have been contemplating changing my GTi for a
GT TDI due to the extra mileage I am doing in my new job, I was
spending pretty much ?80 a week on petrol. I've clocked up 9000 miles
in 6 months and I could see this dramtically increasing due to doing
around 1600 -2000 miles a month.

Also given that the R32 is on sale soon and the fact the demand is
starting to slow given the large number for sale 2nd hand, now
was the time if I was going to do it.

I finally made up my mind after filling up twice this week to swap cars.

I got up early this morning and gave her one final loving clean ready for her to go down the dealers.

Got to the dealers and found a lovely 05 plate GT TDI in light metallic
blue with Leather Interior, sat nav, high line computer, winter packs,
6 disc changer and arm rest, 17" Estoril alloys. It was on sale for
?18,000 with 11,000 miles on the clock. I worked out the spec, with the
options it came to ?22700 when it was new.

My GTi came to ?22375 however I managed to get just under a 2.5K
discount due to ordering from drive the deal way back in November
before the hype set in.

It seemed like pretty equal deal, after sitting in the car I realised
there were pretty much the same minus the silver dials, I had cloth in
my GTi so leather seemed nice along with the inbuilt sat nav. Guess the
speakers will be just as poor as the GTi. By the way does anyone know
if VW Sat Nav is any good????

I finally took one last look at my GTi, walked into the dealer and
spoke to him , they initially offered me 17.5k trade in for my GTi, I
said I would do it for a straight swap, this was the 18k asking price.
They agreed.

Many people will think I could have gotten a lot more however having
looked around the market is being flooded with them, I had mine on ebay
around a month ago and it didn't sell. Most are going for around 19k on
there now. No doubt the dealer will make a couple of grand on it but
thats life.

I couldn't be bothered with the hassle, the GT TDI was a very good spec
and well looked after, apparently it was the managers old car. Probably
slightly thashed. The GTi has also had a fair bit of excitement [:D]

I go to collect the GT TDI on Monday , enough for a final fairwell
drive for my GTi down the country roads. I know there is a more
powerful GT TDI comingout soon but hey , if I wait forever .

The great thing is the GTi petrol tank will be empty again on Monday ,
the GT TDI has a full tank, plus my insurance has refunded ?155.00
RESULT

On another note I was having various conversations with the dealer who
told me there are a lot of people in the dealership with desposits or
interest in the new R32.

I will post pictures of my new baby on Monday, maybe not quite as exciting byt still rather good looking.

Hope the GTi owners and prospective GTi owners carry on having great fun with theirs,

cheers thats what I thought, The GTi was an awesome car to drive.

For the mileage I will be doing a petrol engine is no longer feasible.
I look forward to seeing the 50mpg on the computer plus not having to
drive like an old man to conserve fuel [:p]

I also like to think I'm doing slightly more to help the enviroment and
it also helps to make a small dent in the goverments taxes on fuel due
to not filling up as much . All additional plus points in my book[:D]

Pipe & slippers!!!?? Cheeky!!!

I'm doing 23k a year - have done for some years now........that's why I run a TDi mk5 too.

I don't, however, feel that i'm "second best" on the performance front.

This is no small thanks to the Superchips remap giving me around 185bhp, 400Nm torque.

A decat turbo-back milltek zorst helps too, along with Gti style tailpipes, Gti front brakes, and Gti interior bits.

For a few extra quids you can turn that sleepy diesel into a pocket rocket!

I find myself in the same position. 4 months old and the GTI has 11k on it already. I'm doing I guess quite high milage... so I sold my G40(s) and bought a Lupo to do the miles in. That way I get to keep the GTI [:D]

ha ha, jist joking aboput the Pipe and slippers, I used to have quite a dim view towards diesals until I saw the performance and MPG on some of the Bmer diesals.

My mate had a MK iv GTI TDI and an A3 S-line DSG, he gets around 50 mpg.and reguarly rubs it in.

The GTi is an awesome car, when I was constantly trying to keep your MPG high it sort of detracted from the idea of why I brought the car. Optimax cost me 1.01p a litre so diesal is a baragin to me in comparison.

The TDi i'm picking up looks really good imo and quite sporty too, the 17" wheels help out. ,. I came away from the dealers happy and not feeling that I had traded down to a lesser car due to the high spec, more a different type of car to suit my current driving needs.

It's just a shame they haven't done a diesal GTi with that new 170 bhp engine, now that would be awesome and the perfect all round car for me, I stil think the new GT TDi there bringing out doesn't look as good as the GTi from the pictures I saw.

Maybe in a year I my buy a fun car for the weekends, if the GTI Diesal comes out, stick me down I will be first one in the queue. [:D]

nah, I will miss it but hey I'm doing it for the right reasons, had
good fun with her and it's probably the right time to get rid of her
given the mileage.

In a year I may end up buying a fun car for weekends i.e. not for work. May look at one of the EOS golf's.

Hope you carry on enjoying yours, black is a stunning colour, There are
times when I wish I got the black but hey red is nice too.

I will post some pics tommorow hopefully

put it this way, yesterday, dry sunny morning, i got the traction control light flashing in 2nd gear when acccelorating onto a dual carriageway

3.9s 30-50 in 4th ( matches a standard Imprezza ! )

5.6s 50-70 in 5th

6.8s 50-70 in 6th ( quicker than the R32 ! )

Convinced ?[:D]

and sooo smooth too - you don't even notice how quick the speed piles on
I also drive a 140tdi and I'm seriously thinking about Superchipping it next year. Would you eventually need to upgrade the clutch for that extra torque?[:^)]

Not as far as I am aware - the torque is around 280-290 so is OK. I make sure that my car is up to temperature before I give it any stick. And I guess that as long as you don't hammer it on every occassion, on every journey, you should be OK
