Rumours are floating round the net that Chris Bangle is to leave BMW after the 1 series is finished.

He is the guy responsible for the awful design of the 7 & 5 series cars.

Yeah I heard this, apparently sales of the new 5 are not as BMW hoped, and the 7 was one of thier biggest flops to date, with cars loosing 50% value in 12 months!![:O]

Bangle's cars have all been highly ugly IMHO - good ridance. He alone was pushing me away from a brand I have been loyal to for nearly 10 years.

Has to be a good thing.

BMW will play it safe for the next couple of years and then get slagged for doing that.

Bangle gone can only be a good thing, everyone saw it coming and I think we can all agree on it. Its just gonna take a while for the nice ones to start arriving again!

Thing is, haven't BMW ALWAYS played it safe? There models have always been clones of each other, the 3, 5 and 7 being the same car in different sizes. But it worked and thats what people wanted - the cars were sophisticated and aggressive, they were excellent to drive and they really were fantastic cars. Nothing came close back then - Audis were rich man VWs, and Mercedes were for old men.

The problem has always been:

A) By allowing the 3 series to become so common I think theyve harmed the brand somewhat, as you get muppets in entry level E46s who, ironically, believe they are far superior to everyone else. I have suprsied so many of them in this Bora, if only they knew deep down Im a BMW man...

B) Every BMW, when it reaches 10 years old, will be bought by a muppet. It is every BMWs destiny unfortunately. He will think he is the man because he now owns a BMW - he doesn't realise we all know it cost him £3k, and despite the badge its still a shed.

But you can't get away from these problems. If they can bring back the style of the 1980s shark nosed BMWs Ill be a happy man.

PROPER BMWS:

Completely disagree to sweeping generalisations like that... by that way of definition the very same could be said about your 02 bora v6....

What a load of Two Veg - the people who buy old BMWs are the ones who actually appreciate what it is

ie E30 325 sport owners, nearly ALL of these are true enthusiasts

ie2 People like my dad who will always buy a used one and drive it for another 10 years requiring nothing more than regular maintenance - I wouldn't say he's a muppet

You will find more new BMWs are driven by 'muppets' than old ones are. eg 50 year olds who think they're the 'man' and company car drivers who think they own the feckin road

Well obviously its a sweeping generalisation! There are plenty of enthusiasts with E30 M3s, E4 5 Series and the like who keep them mint. I was more reffering to every tired and warn out 318, 525 and the like with silly chrome wheels and loud exhaust you see every day. Lets say 80% then will be bought by morons and destroyed, while a s elect few will survive as cherished classics; as has been quoted, 325i Sports for example.

I personally would love an E34 M5, completely original, in my garage

I don't think Mike meant it like that Vee, I have a mate who is a lazy f-er, hasn't had a proper job ever and he has a 92 320i just so he can drive a BMW. It's a pile of poo and he could be driving a much newer smaller car for the same money that would at least start in the morning.

I think we're well aware of a classic or mint old car but we're talking clapped out lumps of rubbish that scrotes have bought just so they have a BMW car key.

Yeah, everything's cool ![:D]

Just took exception to the way it read. No big deal.

There are a couple of well know BMW forums which I read regularly but rarely contribute to - one predominantly or new cars one for the old ones

Won't name them but the attitudes in the theads would show what I mean.
