OK fellow VW'ists. I picked up my 3year old Motion in August and here is a list of current problems that I think VW need to address (From the years warranty that they gave me. Let me know if you think I am in the right to get this work sorted under warranty or am I just being picky:

Passenger interior door pull

you have to pull the handle litterally to 90 dgrees before the door will open. Drivers door is fine just have to pull to 45ish degrees. I want VW to adjust this.

Rear ashtray

This does not open and close correctly. The two doors should close together in the middle even if one door of the ashtray is moved I presume or must I manually close both sides of the cover???

Rear Fog lights

I only have one! There does not seem to be a hole for the bulb to go through the rear cluster! Normal?

Tapping Engine noise

From cold the engine seems to make a nasty noise which sounds like maybe some marbles banging together. If I rev the engine the noise speeds too.

What else??....

Skeaking ARB Bushes

My guess anyway, when I go over speed bumps I get a creaking noise from the front wheels!

Rattling handbrake button

The most annoying noise ever when going over small bumps in the road, sounds like a loud mosquito! Could sort myself I suppose.

Rear interior light

On the passenger side does not work all the time! Tried replacing the bulb but no difference. This happens randomly!

Lack of First aid kit

Just an empty compartment in the boot with a strap! Was this a standard item?

...and this today!!

Car stalls

Noticed engine noise has started to come through the speakers which maybe suggests a bad earth somewhere(?) and this has now got worse to the extent where sometimes the dash lights dim and the revs drop dramatically and rise to normal again! On one occasion today the car has stalled completely and when I turned it back on again the ESP warning light is constantly on! Tried to press the ESP button but the light stayed on so pulled over and turned thecar off and on again and the light has reset.

It seems funny how none of these issues seem to have surfaced on the test drive!!!

PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME!!! [:(!][:(][:(!][:(][:(!][:(][:(!][:(]

I can help with the handbrake button! (got to start somewhere)

I pushed a small amount of bluetac down there - complete silence now... (I just bought my 4mo as well and that noise drove me nuts too!)

By the way - just to freak you out... have you seen the usernames??? [?]

and we bought our 4mo's almost at the same time... God I hope the voices haven't started typing to me as well! [}:)]

I think you are only supposed to have one reversing light. The first aid kits don't come as standard in the U.K., I think they are mandatory in some other countries, you should however have collapseable warning triangle in that compartment

You should have two reversing lights and one rear fog light on the off-side. It`s easy to get two fogs, you`ll need, a fog light bulb, some electrical wire and some patience.

I managed to wire up another fog-light in about half an hour.

Hi Burnsy V6,sounds like your having a rough time with the 4mo! I can help with a couple of things. Door handle sounds faulty, perhaps a damaged linkage if the window reg has been replaced? Rear ashtray should close together as you say,i used to work for a VW agent, and this is quite a common fault, but they may use the old wear and tear line. As for creaking at the front over bumps,i had exactly the same problem, diagnosed as bushes, but the anti roll bar itself had a fracture in it! They replaced the lot under warranty, but i dread to think what it would have cost if id had to pay for it!! Hope this helps mate. Paul.

Rear ashtray: Ive had two MKIVs and this sounds normal...I need to squeeze them together to close it rather than push just one side

Rear Fog lights: Normal. Only have a fog on the drivers side in most cars so people following you do not think they are just brake lights

Lack of First aid kit: Not supplied in the UK...you will notice a slot in your glove box that is empty too - it holds a camera, note pad and measuring tape required by law insome countries for recording an accident

I would get the stalling, tapping noise, and bushes looked at by the dealer. Book it in for that and make a note of the door trigger and rear light issues so they sort them at the same time. I personally only mention little things like that when another maore major problem is being done, Im not booking my car in for a squeaky dash or broken cupholder. If you do that they are also more willing to sort it...mine even fixed my stiff boot lifters without me asking

Handbrake rattle can be cured if u adjust the handbrake cable collar which is near the rear ashtray area. You'll need to dismantle the central console, by removing 2 torx screws which are located underneath the rear ashtray. Once you can gain access to the back of the handbrake lever, you can then adjust the handbrake cable by a few mm, enough to make the button stop buzzing/rattling.

Rear ashtray - yes they are supposed to open/shut together smoothly. However the mechanism can become dislodged if it's knocked (read KICKED) by clumsy back seat passengers.

You need to remove the side cover (cant remember which side) and then refit the spring and gear inside the side cover.

should take you about 10 mins max

Interior Light - feck knows, sounds like a loose connection somewhere.

Interior door pull - you need to get the cable adjusted. take the door card off and adjust the cable.

Rattly engine from cold - ummm, I can honestly say all my Golfs have done this. I've owned 2x 1.8T's and now an R32 from new, and they all rattle from cold (tappet rattle) which goes away soon as the oil warms a little.

I wonder if your car's is the same? probably worth getting a garage look at it if it bothers you enough

Skeaking ARB Bushes

i had this to, they replaced the arb bushes twice, then the arb and bushes with no change then they replaced the drop links with a new design drop link (not a recall) this sorted it

Exactly. I have the same problem and it was also diagnosed as the droplinks by my VW dealer. My car is over 3 years old, and apparently it's quite a common fault as the weight of the engine compresses the bushes and ultimately works its way to the linkage. They reckon if it's not sorted soon it can cause damage to and ultimatly the need for repacement of your ARB. The (bush and droplink) job including parts has been guestimated at ?150 - mainly due to the labour cost - the parts cost pence [:(!]

Incidently there are a lot of roundabouts where I live so not suprisingly it was the passenger side that went.

Also - had the car since new - the ashtray was broken from new! Replaced under warranty.

Tapping noise - might just be valve noise when the engine is still cold - mine has done this since new.

And no First aid kit - or warning trangle came with my car. I didn't expect it to though.

Oh and I can sometimes hear the engine through the stereo (alternator?) - I just put it down to bad earthing in the stereo. Doesn't really bother me as the milltek is far more interesting to listen to - and it sort of sounds like a turbo/supercharger[:D]

Don't get to mad about those minor niggles though - there are enough pros to more than compensate IMHO.

Thanks for your replies peeps. I wouldn't take the car back just for the minor stuff but I have had further development on the speaker noise problem!! This moring I started the car as usual and let it warm up for a few minutes and drove off as usual. As the revs climbed in third gear the car started to misfire or something and was juddering. Easing off of the throttle and it stopped but then I tried to speed up again and the it happened again this time causing the Check Engine light to flash. so I pulled over and turned off the car for a few minutes and restarted again. The Engine light had now reset but the juddering was still present but was residing and after about 10 - 15 mins on the road completely cleared. VW dont reckon they have availablity to look at it in the next two weeks!!!! Anyone had a similar issue

Sounds like one or more of the Coil Packs have failed on the engine.

Coil packs can/do fail if you have ones from a few years ago.

If it those that have failed, they are easy to replace, job done in minutes by VW assist or VW garage.

Does ur car have any warrenty left?

Thanks Gti FLY. Someone mentioned maybe a coil problem at work this morning. mine is three years old but I still have a 10 months of the warranty left as they gave me a year's when I bought it. (lucky I bought it from a VW garage!) Apparently should get it sorted asap cos if the car is overfueling it can damage the CAT?!? Do you know if this could be causing the speaker noise also?

If the problem only occurs in damp weather and disapears as the engine warms....

If you have an early(ish) V6 with the single coil pack on the right hand side of the block an easy way to tell if the coilpack is the problem is to lift the bonnet, start the car and spray the coilpack with a fine mist of water from a plant sprayer - if the coil pack is faulty you will see the sparks.

Be careful to keep your hands off the engine etc.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong ( I don't have one of these sophisticated Golfs[:(] ) but isn't there a facility whereby the radio volume will go up/down according to road speed ( is it Gala? ).

Therefore there is an interaction between radio and other electrics.

Could this be related to the radio noise / stalling problem?

Just a long-shot trying to help.

Just an update on how the prob's are going, if anyone is interseted:

The engine trouble is still ongoing, accoring to VW, no 6 cyclinder is running incorrectly so they have sent off of for new plugs and ht leads and have found errors in the diagnostics thingie!? Also they are replacing the rear exhaust section as the inside of the muffler was "in pieces". Interior bits and bobs still to be looked at plus the antiroll bar creaking.
