Hi there!

First of all i'd like to say well done for putting together such a good forum, it took me a while to find but so far there's been nothing but good advice and some great deals going on.

I have a few questions that some of you can hopefully solve for me:

Firstly i'm now sharing my Girlfriends Mk4 2.0 GTi (2003), it's under VW warranty but i just wanted to know how this would be effected if i was to either put some lowering springs on, or maybe go for Coilovers?

Are they likely to void the warranty if i start modifying it??

Also, if we go for 18 or 19's, how much should the car be lowered by to not look stupid and boat like? Would a 50mm drop be ok, or would it be too harsh a ride??

Hope you can help,

Thanks guys!

How much did the springs lower your car by? Did you go for the 50mm springs??

Coilovers would be ideal...... but i just don't know where i'd stand with warranty etc :(

Zel, good point you've made there.... if nobody knows for sure i'll give them a call to see what they say. I would have thought the Warranty would only be Void if there was a failure on the Suspension or something, surely the other parts are still covered?? (Engine etc?)

How about Wheels? That shouldn't matter should it??

Thanks for that - so lowering springs = bad idea in general?

I'll keep a look out for some deals on Suspension Setup's, i just don't want to kill the ride of the car as my Girlfriend would go mental + she likes to take speed humps at 30mph lol... not really but i just don't want it to be uncomfortable.

I know that the Insurance company need to know, but my concern about the warranty is that it's pretty good piece of mind should anything go wrong, i just don't want to be left with a massive bill if say the Water pump fails just because i changed the suspension....

I think i'd best give them a call to be sure!

Hmmm you guys are doing a good job to convince me!

I'm going to start looking around at Coilovers, i think that way at least i can get the setup changed as and when i get fed up with it etc.

If i can get an FK set reasonably cheap i may as well go for it!

Can any Garage fit Coilovers? Or am i best to go to a specialist? Just that i'm awawre they need setting up and probably won't be from the factory........

Richard - no intentions of Tracking the car, (it's only a 2.0) lol

What other setups are there? What sort of money? I thought Koni Dampers were all about the same price as a Coilover kit from FK??

Chris - it shouldn't cost that much to fit, maybe ?100? It's not that difficult anyway, i watched a mate swap all 4 shocks on my GTI-R in around 1.5 hours.... ?100 should include fitting, then allignment etc to make sure it's all ok!

That's what i'm hoping anyway mate!

Ahh well, thinking about it a bit more, it doesn't really need to be height adjustable - just lower the car a fair bit and still be a decent enough ride not to make the car rattle to pieces!
