Okey, so im thinking of getting a stupidly loud dump valve for my '99 1.8T. I had a baily piston jobbie on my Renault 5 turbo years ago and remember it being great fun.

Been looking around and reading up on the web, i have found this one, the Turbo Xs which is pretty much the loudest available, allgedly...

So, has anyone got a dump valve fitted to thier 1.8T? I have read bad things about fault codes being brought up when fitted, also stuff about boost leakage, and im not sure i understand the whole atmospheric/non atmospheric stuff either. Can anyone shed some useful info on the subject? Cheers [:D]

U no u want one deeep down so do it ! thats what turbo cars are for mate, it is pref if u like em or not but i love them!

only the later 1.8t engine (ones with DBW) mess up if u put a atmos DV on, the earlier ones such as yours are fine! Im kinda jealous as mine is later one and cant have a atmos DV [:(] dohhh !

i wouldnt get a dead loud one thou, nice loud woooosh but not OTT!!

Basically non atmos DV put the unused turbo pressure back in to the engine, while the atmos ones release them into the atmosphere. the 1.8t comes with a dv standard but its non atmos hence why it cannot be heard, Anyway the later engines dont like it (Thats the techinal term and reason LOL) with out the non atmos DV and can cause ECU light to appear on dash and rough idleing and even stalling. But urs should be ok, i recommend the baileys trumpet DV so coool !

it depends if you have a throttle cable. if you do then your car will be fine. if it doesnt have a cable then the car wont run right with an atmospheric dv. My car is a 2000 model and is engine code ARZ which is dbw (no throttle cable)

i think so i am not to sure thou mate, if it is non-DBW wire you should be fine. u can tell this as when you turn ur ignition on a light called "ECP" will be shortly displayed (Light is situated on the rev counter) if you have this light it mean ur engine is DBW (Electronic throttle basically) and unfortunatly no dv for u. But u could always get a carbonio CAI almost as good as the real thing so i hear, it enhances the sound of ur non atmos DV [H] mine one is coming shortly lol

Thanks guys, and yes i do know what you mean about dump valves being a little bit chav - I think it does depends on the car though. I like the idea that no-one would really expect the noise coming from a standard looking golf....

To check if you have a cable throttle;

In neutral, rev up to about 2000rpm then push the brakes with your left foot at the same time. If the revs drop to idle you have DBW, if not it's cable.

As to should you have one - go for it if you like the sound. Your car - your choice!
