I have always had tasty ICE of some magnitude in my chariots...but the mk5 seems the dullard of the lot in stock form.....

I want an upgrade plan which will allow me to buy when i can afford to and add to the setup in reasonable steps.

I'd prefer to keep my Sat-Nav Head Unit but the rest can be ditched.

It's essential that the install is discrete and preferably fits into original speaker locations......whilst the boot area is maintained as fully and flexibly as practicable.

I've done the insane ear-bleeding, glass breaking install back in the late 80's with a ?4.5k install, so no need to do it again!

I want nice quality with 'ample' volume levels.

My recent experiences with Kenwood amps/speakers have been favourable but i'm sure there are better makes around for similar money.

Any help greatly appreciated.......grathias!

What you looking for...

...subs/amp, component speakers?

or all of the above?

What kind of sound do you want, ie smooth mids with enough bass but not OTT (eg a chavved up Nova with home hifi speakers)?

I want accurate but not brash top end, no over-brightness when pushed a bit, sufficient mids to fill in and some nice kicking bass......sub-bass is an option too.

Amps essential but want sensible stuff and not alot of it!!

Budget is variable but needs to be good value for money.

Go for CDT mids!

My mate that works at ICS made me listen to his in his car!

they sound awesome and his headunit was powering them only!

the sound was crystal clear and had the right bass!

he has tempted me to invest in some!!!best speakers i have heard

I know a guy who had a lovely sounding install in his mk3 (until he wrote it off!) Consisted of Alpine headunit, DLS reference components and Genesis profile 4 amp. Later he installed a JL amp, which gave bags of sub-bass, but it stll sounded great, mainly due to Dynamat in the whole car. A lot of work, but definitely worth it.

Im hoping to get similar in my mk4, Alpine h/u, Focal speakers up front and Genesis amp, this was reccommended bt my local car hifi shop, they have an excellent pedigree.

Hope this is of some help.

Foxy,

I'm feeling exactly the same mate. Let us know what you decide on and how you get on as I may follow you down the same route. If you could do some how to/installation instructions like you did for the MFD2 that would be great. Oh and if you do decide to get rid of your MFD2 any chance you could send it my way?

if you need some nice amps the ones from my signature are in the classifieds.

Other than that CDT speakers are very nice but quite expensive, you could go three ways up front to allow you to get the bass you want without using subs in the boot (dynaudio for example) Genesis are always highly regarded and there p16 components recently won an award in TCA magazine I believe.

Foxy,

I'm guessing you have seen the install in Mr. Stewarts anni?

The custom amp rack in the back of that was built for me by a friend who works for a ICE and trimming specialist. If there enough mk5 owners here looking to keep their install neat and discreet in the boot then I could contact them to see what the costs would be. As the unit in the Anni was a one off it was expensive due to design costs. However, I am sure if there are a few people wanting it we can get unit cost down.

I will try to get a pic off him to illustrate my description!!

Yeah Jon, as we will be meeting up for Autosport you can have a look in the boot if you have not seen it already. The pictures are on my home PC so I'll upload them later, along with a full description of the kit.

I'd better bring some choons too - although you have a disc for me we can demo [:D]

Im thinking of genesis profile 4 amp and MTX 12" sub with 2 channels upfront and 2 powering the sub. Probably gonna stick with the OEM speakers up front and in the rear hoping the amp will boost the fronts a bit. Had some really great sounding MTX 6x9s in my old car (came with the car- then got nicked!) i would think the sub will be of similar quality.

Let us know what you opt for Foxy and where you get a good price. If there is enough people wanting Genesis amps maybe we could organise a group buy??? What do you think?

As one or two know,i have genesis amps and focal components.I am not frightened to recommend this setup to anyone,as the results are quite astounding. It's a total sound quality setup, but for best results, needs expert attention at some time during the installation.

OK, I?ve cut/pasted/edited a message from ChrisB to me when we were doing the deal on the car, and then there are a couple of pics;

This was supplied and fitted by the guys down at Hide and Fidelity (www.birdsauto.com). It makes use of the standard VW Gamma head unit and 6 disk dash cd changer as I wanted the system to be completely stealth. In the factory door position there are MTX 6.5" mids fitted into strengthened adaptor rings and the MTX tweeters are mounted in the factory position. In the rear for fill there is a set of 6.5" 2 way MTX components in the factory location (the rear VW tweeters have been disconnected as they were too close to the driver and spoilt the soundstage).

In the boot is where the trickery begins. The MTX 4 channel amp driving the front and rear speakers is mounted on the rear of the rear seats. This is also where the bridged MTX 2 channel amp for the subwoofer is too along with fuses and all the other technical gubbins Birds/H&F said I needed!! However, all of this equipment is on a mounting plate and attached to this mounting plate is a vented cover that H&F fabricated out of aluminium sheet, leather trim and matching boot carpet.

The boot and all doors are Dynamatted. Nothing shakes or rattles.

Finally in the boot there is a single 10" subwoofer by MTX. This is the only bit I could not get stealth as this would have meant losing the spare wheel and putting the sub in there. However, it's not too intrusive in the boot as MTX seem to have pioneered big bass from small enclosures and it sits quite happily in the corner of the boot. Overall the quality of the sound system is superb whether being listened to at low or full volume, classical music or proper house - it's perfect and you can't see any of it!!

And soon after I bought it from Chris I needed more bass so the 10? sub was swapped for a 12? MTX sub, and I haven?t looked back, except when I try and get the baby buggy in[:D].

I'm drawing a schematic (i'm back at work again!!) to see it thru.

Is this a reasonable arrangement these days?

My MFD2 has no sub-out nor pre-outs by the look of the pre-install pics....

I'm looking at a single Genesis profile four ultra to provide the required umph for mine, 2 x 100watts RMS for the front components (probably JL Audio XR's) and channels 3 & 4 bridged for 1 x 300 watts RMS (all at 4 ohms). The rear speakers I would leave standard and run off the rear channels of the head unit's internal amp, these should be turned down alot compared to the fronts anyway so the front soundstage is not dragged back in the car. The amp can be sourced from -http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3679&osCsid=1270a5521ff92b911797fded5a21180b .

So, what about rockford amps - they are not too dear....I have always thought they were good, but are they refined?

What about Infinity component speakers - too 'Halfords' or good for the money?
