1 Fault Found:
17544 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean
P1136 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Got the above code from a 2001 Audi A6 1.8T, which when reset comes up a day later with a warning light on the dash.

I've had a search of the web, an it indicates that it could be due to a boost leak, question is where, and is it possible to do some logged runs to work out where the problem could be ?

I've had a read of the follow page http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/Fuel_Trim_Info and done for diag runs.

Group 32 just has static values of 5.3% (Additive) and 7.8% (Multiplicative)
Group 31 had acutal values between 0.891 and 1.991 and specified values between 0.899 and 1.047

I also did a MAF test on block 002, which produced the following output using Uwe's spreadsheet template

During this testing, the fault didn't reappear, and the only noticiable fault we could see was at idle, so I did a TBA to see if this might cure the problem.

I have had a similar code coming up same as you russ so let me know if you find the soloution.

It may be down to a faulty lamba sensor as well ? could be worth giving a clean, I am cleaning the MAF and I will be checking all the boost pipes over the weekend as well as refitting my decat as I think my standard one is fubared but is ok to get me through the MOT, Ireally cant wait just the way I like to spend a weekend deep joy !!!!

Hi

I thought that fuel system bank 1 referred to the Lambda?

So did I, but reading the wiki, it could be due to a MAF or air leak before the probes causing the fault.

The lambda have already been out and cleaned before I did the logging, though looking at the slightly higher value that one of the probes was giving, maybe this could be the fault ?

Russ what did you use to clean the lambda ?
Afraid I didn't do it Henry, but I presume that if could be cleaner using some alchol that is used to clean the MAF, and maybe a toothbrush to ensure no debris is left.

I have a similar fault with mine, however it can't seem to make up it's mind if it's too lean or too rich.

Would be interested to see what comes of cleaning the MAF. Reluctant to just replace it as although it seems to be the root of all evil in performance issues, I'm not convinced.
Any idea how much new lambda sensors are? Do I have to start saving?

To test your MAF, try an 002 block read when pulling in gear.

Thanks for that. I've done that, however don't seem to have too much data... maybe should have tried acclerating thru 3rd instead of second... chart data after passing thru that XL spreadsheet looks like the following. Does that mean anything to anyone? Shouldn't the engine load% be higher?

Just for ref on mine it was the MAF in the end cleaned it and nothing changed it and has been good as gold since.
On the car that is having this problem, a TBC sorted the problem for 3 weeks, then the code is thrown whenever the car idles on a incline.

Were going to check all the hoses this weekend, otherwise we'll look at the MAF.

I am having the exact same problem on my 1.8T bora. I was looking at the link to the ross-tech site and it says the following

"Add" means additive trim, which is addressing an imbalance at idle. When the ECU is using additive trim, it is telling the injectors to stay open a fixed amount longer or shorter. The malfunction (e.g. vacuum leak) becomes less significant as RPM increase

So that indicates that it it only affected on low revs or tick over and is probably a vaccum leak. I will need to check them all aswell.

The light has since came on twice, both times when I was going easy slowly down for a set of traffic lights.  The problem must be coming from a vaccum leaked caused mainly a low revs (ie tickover)  I will have a good look around all the vac pipes at the weekend.

I found a vac leak on mine, it was underneath the inlet manifold to the righthand side as you look at the engine from the front.  There were two pipes held together with a rubber sleeve.  The crack was at the back of one of the pipes.  I took it out and heatshrinked over it for the meantime.  all seems good now..hope that is of some help.

Not a boost leak, but a vacuum leak. When your ECU is operating in the additive fuel trim region, I guarantee you there's no boost. Leak could be anywhere in the plumbing between the MAF and the intake manifold, or one of the things connected to that plubling, for example the fuel tank venting system. A good repair shop should have a "smoke machine" which can be connected to the plumbing and fills it with dense smoke under a bit of pressure. Then they look for where the smoke is coming out.

Finally found the cause of this fault.

From the picture posted above, No 1 - Blue had perished at the end where it's clamped onto the manifold. So a quick trim and re-fit and it's all sorted.
