Just another Mk 4 Golf owner who is very grateful for the information provided about changing the wiper mechanism.

I noticed that the wipers were slowing down earlier in the summer but driving in the rain the other day, they were very sluggish and stopped.

The advice on this post was that it was not the motor but the mechanism so I ordered one from the VW dealer and the cost was £58.

eBay is full of secondhand units but one has to ask the question as to why you would fit a secondhand mechanism that has been exposed to the elements for approximately the same time as the unit you are replacing. I would strongly recommend getting a new one. They are available aftermarket but with carriage from Poland/East Germany they are not much cheaper than the main dealer and they will have it next day for you to collect..

Changed the unit this afternoon and it is now back to "as new" and very pleased. Indeed the old unit was so seized that I could hardly move the operating arms. I would not think about dismantling them and cleaning them up as they are engineered to fine tolerances and your efforts will not last long. The new unit will last another 10 years probably and probably outlast the car as it has 150k on the clock.

It did not go exactly as planned as I could not get the passenger wiper arm off the post no matter what I tried and I did not want to damage the scuttle. I resorted to freeing the scuttle as described and then undoing the 3 x 10mm studs under the scuttle that hold the mechanism in position and was able to remove the wiper mechanism with the scuttle.

I got the angle grinder with a thin cuttter disc and cut through the offending post and then punched out the centre so then back on track.

Absolutely spot on is the advice to run the motor and park it in the correct position and also lining up the two arms so that they are in a straight line.

Final thing is that I cleaned the channel at the base of the windscreen that the scuttle edge sits over and it slotted back in very well.

For anyone doing this I repeat, do not remove the arms from the motor. Slip them through the mech. ☺

Very good how-to and further excellent comments on this thread. Thanks.

I would only add - while you are in there, clean the scuttle and drains. It takes 2 mins extra and can save you a world of hassle with a wet, smelly interior. (It took 2 months to properly dry out my old A4).

Not sure. Motors never fail though (well not never but you get my point).

Do not buy a used mech for replacement.

Right who stated to me that the mark for Bora wiper blade mechanism and motor fits directly onto my car is wrong the plug for a star is three times as big yes it has for terminals therefore I'm unable to fit this to my vehicle the motor on the vehicle mechanism of the car has very low speed and therefore I want to change it Now then I need advice I think I need image rights to help me out here because I need to rewire the four pins into the new motor so if you are reading this don't go buying Bora wiper blade mechanisms they don't fit direct different plug

It's easy mate just undo the bolts let it circle then tight up the bolts lol
i meant the plastic scuttle panel, refuses to sit flush on the windscreen, i've removed the thing about 10 times, cleaned all dirt out of the grooves on the scuttle and the car and it still refuses to sit flush!
