Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd send out a warning.

Friday night me and the missus went to the cinema at the Trafford Centre. Parked on the Orient car-park. As usual we parked away from all other cars, to avoid door dings etc.

Got back to the car at around 23:30. And to be honest we didn't really take much notice of the car. It was cold and we just wanted to get in and get home. However the next day, when I moved the car off our drive, I noticed the lower section of our Anniversary's bumper had been nicked.

Obviously, until we pursue the CCTV evidence with the Trafford Centre, I cannot be a 100% sure that it happened there. There is the chance that it was done our drive...but I doubt it, we are tucked away in the corner of a cul-de-sac away from any main roads etc. Car isn't visible to anyone turning into the street. But hey, you never know.

But my gut feeling, as soon as I saw the spoiler missing, was "trafford centre". There is just so much scum hanging about there and wandering through the car parks.

Anyway, I have reported the possible incident to the trafford centre. But you have to pay an Administration and Data Protection Act fee to get them to look through the footage.

The car looks so awful with out the spoiler. Its amazing what a difference it makes. But I suppose it could have been worse, we could have had the wheels nicked or car-jacked. Who ever has nicked it have done a very clean job. They have cut through the wheel arch liners around where the spoiler bolts on.

As for replacements. We are going to need two new wheel arch liners, front spoiler, speed nuts, torx screws, and then the respray cost. The missus has been to VW in Warrington today for a quote.....wait for it....590 including parts, VAT, fitting, spraying etc.

I'm looking at sourcing the parts myself and have already contacted VAGPARTs.

Anyone know a good body shop in the North West?

Cheers

you - "hello officer, I would like to report a crime, I've had something stolen from me"

cuntstable - "certainly sir, I'm sorry to hear that. You do realise that to report a crime you have to pay?"

you - "hmm, let me see, lose out on having the stuff stolen then PAY to report it. So what exactly am I paying Income tax, National Insurance, Council tax and every other tax for?"

cunstable - " well sir, I do feck all for a living and MP's have a great way of life, get paid a minimum of 50k a year (plus expenses). Where else do you think this money comes from?"

Makes you have great confidence in the judicial systems eh!

Sorry to hear about your stuff getting nicked. Try to get the arch lines and bots etc from a scrappy and only get the spoiler new. Otherwise - insurance claim??

Gutting, I won't take mine there for that reason and a friend of mine got held up at gunpoint, shoved in his boot and dropped off in Salford for his 1.8T.... it's a hellhole of a place!

Brown Lowes near the Autotrader place off Bewsey Road is a really good place, they bareshelled my friend's MKII and did a fantastic job - you can get them on 01925 230 630 multimap them on WA5 0LW.

I heard rumours of a black Anniversary being seen in Warrington, I'm from there originally... think you may have been flashed a few times by mistake!

Can fully sympathise with you as it happened to me last year. They nicked it in the same way but it happened in Bristol.

Didn't cost me that much to fix though. I think it was ?150 for the
spoiler, ?100 (ish) for painting and the wheel arch liners were around
?20 each.

Thanks for sympathy and advice guys.

It is gutting when this happens. But what can we do, we both have nice cars, so either one could get damaged at such a place. I just can't understand why someone would do this to what is such a gorgeous and special car. If they themselves have a Golf, and are into modding etc., I just wouldn't expect an enthusiast to do such a thing. In fact I'm certain an enthusiast wouldn't. Who ever has done it, is just scum of the earth, who has no respect for other peoples possessions, NOR any appreciation of a nice car.

We are both so relieved the wheels didn't get nicked. We are on the original, non-refurbished, Anni wheels. And no intention of having the dull new ones from VW. But imagine the bill if those had gone!! Ouch! That would have had to be on the insurance.

Anyway, I have logged a call with Greater Manchester police. They actually sounded very helpful and positive, and said they will pursue the matter with the Trafford Centre. Of course I didn explain, we can't be 100% certain it happened there. But at least if they do look at the footage, and if it hasn't happened there, I will then know it has happened at home. Then it will be me installing CCTV!! hahaha :) When I told the police about the admin charge the TC are charging, his response was great, "ha! they can think again if they think they are charging us!!"

Thanks for the tip on the bodyshop Tony. We do visit warrington often in the Anniversary, with work and family. But I have seen two black ones there as well. So there must be three knocking about. hmmmm, that gives me an idea......only kidding!!! hahaha

I've seen loads of Golfs in b'ham around with no front spoiler.
I've put it down to theft or the excessive amount of speedbumps we have
here.

Either way has put me off buying an Anni front spoiler. Just don't want the hassle.

Feck! You've all got me worried now! Only just bought mine! But i think i will definatley be keeping it in my garage over night, either that or have the front of the car facing a wall when its parked over night, (not alot of these retards can tell what car it is, from the rear). There is 1 other in Leicester that i have seen, also a silver TDI, but i see a black Anniversary (not sure if its a 1.8T or TDI) on the way to work, just off junction 1 of the M69 towards Nuneaton.

note to self - stay away from burmiingum (yes I know it's spelt incorrectly - it's meant to be funny)

But since there are a lot that are driving about with one missing, surely there must, by the process of elimination, be the same amount driving about with two!?!?!?!?!?!?

B'ham isn't that bad mate I live here lol, touchwood nothings ever
happened to the cars on our driveway (sonnys golf, mums golf both
modded, dads two mercs and my corsa lol) it depends what area your in,
in b'ham i know for a fact if you go down alum rock, small heath,
Acocks Green and parts of stetchford id be a tad more wary as these are
places that the theifs don't think twice and will do anything for a bit
of cash.

Saying that, I saw a Mk4 yesterday without a front valance too!
It's a very small percentage of cars that do get things pinched off
them. But as an enthusiast you tend to notice things on other
golfs.

I'm sure when you all see other Golfs you do a quick scan to see how nice it is or what's been done to it.

Besides, just because i've seen these cars in brum, there's no saying that the theft was done here!!

I've sold a silver TDI Anni to a chap near Leicester though his BBS are in his loft now.
On Tuesday I saw a tidy Listers VW plated Anni (VA52 XXX) in a train station car park in South Bham (I wont say where exactly) but the wheels where really dull but the centre caps were the original bling - this looked a bit 'odd' and ties in with an employee of said dealership telling me that they just paint the wheels in their workshop as VW wont entertain warranty claims from them, only customers.

I saw an ex-Lex lease silver TDI Anni with 60k miles at an auction in Derby that was missing its front spoiler. This was bought by a specialist in Nottingham for a lot of money and I think (though can't be sure) a standard from spoiler was fitted after being painted.

Birmingham isn't that bad, only thing that makes me nervous is the spate of VAG car jackings in South East districts but a gang was caught recently -I'm sure they'll be out again before I can afford a Mk5 GTI!

You've got me looking now! I've seen about 5 cars - slightly modded, all with front spoilers missing.

UKMIVS vigilante group anyone?!!!

I keep looking for lesser model golfs with a black anniversary valance on it!

We've still not had the car fixed yet. It took a while getting prices from VAG-PARTS. But then we found out that someone at work, her son is a mechanic at VW. He couldn't get a discount on the parts, but offered to do the whole job for 480 quid. About 100 quid cheaper than going to the dealer directly. So we've gone that route. Fingers crossed, new spoiler should be fitted this weekend. Just hope the guy who is spraying it remembers to spray inside the grill section.

Cheers

PS: great forum this. Especially the efforts people have gone to on the Anniversary wheels posts.

Well, new spoiler fitted at last!!! Wow, what a difference.

Only problem....spray work is just OK. Not the best. The up-right sections in the "intake" hole have not be sprayed or not very well. As they feel a little rough to the touch. Also, I think the paint looks slightly lighter on the lower lip of the intake hole.

Ah well, I suppose if you try to do things on the cheap sometimes you get what you pay for. Don't think its worth paying another 100 quid though to have it sprayed again though.

Cheers
