Whilst taking my brother-in-law out for a quick hack in the dub since having it re-mapped a few weeks ago, we happeded to come across a bright orange Focus ST (nearly made me sick just from the sight of it!) with two youngish lads in it.

Thought we might as well follow it for a while as we was behind it (would have been rude not to!) and had nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon. At first they did not seem to be up for a little fun but then suddenly they were off overtaking cars so off we went to give chase....

They caught us very slightly off gaurd but I was soon up behind them and as they overtook the second car we just sat behind it smiling!! After about a mile or so a car in front of them pulled in to the right and once it was out the way off they went and from a standing start we just pulled on them in every gear even having to back off the throttle constantly to avoid any form of unwanted contact as we could not overtake due to oncomming traffic.

It was not a dangerous race of any sort just a quick blast to see what both cars had and the conclusion in my eyes is save some pounds and buy a Golf 1.8T and get it remapped ! I must admit I was quite surprised how well our 1.8T totally out performed the focus for straight line speed, well worth the money for the re-map. Most fun [:D]

You may be right but for 2 reasons...

1- he would have to catch me first!! [:p]

2- For the difference in cost between the cars I'm sure I can get the dub to handle better than the Focus (may take me 10k tho LOL!!)

Would like to have seen his face with the Golf just sitting with him. Bet he took it back to the dealers today to get it checked over!!! [;)]

I agree with Brian dude, the focus does handle much better than the Golf. (Old car was a Focus), but as you say there's more to a car than just the handling, otherwise i wouldn't have bought my Golf.. lol.

Anyway, what sort of figures are you pushing out after the remap? Which one did you get? Big difference?

Cheers

Do you mean kept up with it?

Thing is, your car is remapped, let him remap the ST and then you can cry!

Our car is now running 238bhp with around 240lb torque (Jabba re-map) . As we did all mods before remap ie. exhaust, induction etc we saw big gains over standard (nearly 90bhp!).

It's been done for around 3 weeks now and the smile never dissapears from our faces! It feels a different car to drive and the feeling when it starts boosting is amazing. I know people have cars with a lot more power than this but this increase in power we have is well worth the money, especially when surprising Focus ST drivers! LOL!!!

I test drove an ST and they are great cars. The salesman went out with me in my car afterward and agreed my 1.8T Seat with 243bhp and 244ft/lbs was slightly quicker.

However, spend a similar amount modifying the ST as you did on your 1.8T and you would be making closer to 300bhp and therefore leaving the 1.8T for dead. The ST will be running close to half the boost you are, and it has 700cc more and an extra cylinder.

What is this, the ford appreciation club?!?!

Obviously i'm bias since the 1.8t mentioned is my car (i share with hubby mk4t) and i can tell you i would rather have a classy vw than a sh*t ford any day, put your handbags away please boys or i will let loose with my sharp lipstick.....

I thought this was a VW forum, anyway our car costs around ?7k in total and the ST is ?25k+ so I will always be grinning, and it was not a case of keeping up, if I could have got past I would have done with ease! It was all caught on viddy cam by my bro-in-law and if we can get it off the phone will post it up just to confirm my statement.

Anyway enough ranting, my car is considerably quicker than his no matter what the cost as on the day he was beaten by a golf!! LOL...LOL

It is a VW forum, however, we laugh at other threads that have 'vs' on other boards, recently it's been a clip 182 forum we been taking the pee out of.

Your comparing a standard ST against a well remapped 1.8T which yes, you pointed out right from the start. But you said you basically slaughtered them. This is what I doubt. A 220bhp Lighter car against a 238 (as you say) heavier car and it was easy?!

Now get a non-modded 1.8T (and I'll be generous here) 180bhp Golf. Do the same race. Not so easy. You also said you have done a fair few other mods, whereas the Focus would have been, I should think, standard.

You would have kept up, yes. Wee'ed all over them while grinning and laughing, no.

As for 7k versus 25k, bad argument, the Focus ST is brand new, and I'm only guessing here, but yours must be around a Y plate! The ST will be the same in value in 6 years time as your golf now!!

What you have proved however is that you have got a good map. I can also imagine how big the grin on your face was when the ST was looking at you as if to say 'WTF'. [:D]

Lol @ the handbags! [:D]

Those are excellent figures! An extra 90bhp is very impressive! Is that just from the exhaust, filter and remap? Do you mind me asking how much those things cost?

Its defintely a route i'm considering.
