Having just had Casino special edition arrive today, I thought I would
ask others what their favourite ganster type films are, and maybe we
could all gived each other some good recommendations.

My favourites are Godfather 1 and 2 and Scarface. I thought Donnie
Brasco and Carlitos Way were pretty good but not favourites of mine.

I've got that one, I think it spreads over 2 DVDs. I think it was made
in the 80s. Very good film, but I think maybe just 1 or 2 wrong bits in
it, like where DeNiro is raping that girl in his car.

Goodfellas (book is good to). Never get bored of it. The acting and characterisations are superb, brilliant story. Always put off getting the DVD because it was a flipper. Wonder what the special edition is like though?

I like Casino as well. Godfather - only 1, although 2 is OK i suppose.

Anyone watch the Sinatra thing last night?

Sonny
Forgot about Carlito there Sonny. That's up there too, no doubt. Actually preferred the film to the book this time (book is in 2 with 'After Hours' if i remember back 10 years ago)

I know it's crime rather than gangster but the Usual Suspects and Heat go with Ronin as favourites of mine.

...and the Travolta/Jackson dialogues in Pulp Fiction just crack me up.
Forgot about the Usual Suspects there. I think I was the last person in the country to see that film. Only just watched it last year. Best ending I have seen for a longtime. I'm not a Spacey fan, but he was spot on in that film. Top marks.

(This isn't a gangsta film, but the Green Mile was really enjoyable when I eventually got around to watching last week. You've all probably seen it now though - i'm really behind with films just now.)

Watching Heat for the first time just now. So far pretty good.
Enjoy! It's a re-make of an 80's film called LA Takedown made by Michael Mann (yes the Miami Vice one!) with bigger stars.
Andy McNab was their tactical advisor - you'll notice the bit where he helped - I won't give it away if you haven't seen it all!!

I know A7, the missus watched it over 2 nights a few weeks back and I never fancied it (don't like Hanks to much) and it just seemed too long.

Watch it in 2 parts last weekend and I've changed my view on Hanks now as well.

(This is again, well off topic (not like me), but I've also not long finished Andy McNabs Bravo two Zero and that really is top drawer stuff.)

Never seen Ronin? Was that his lastest concert where all the 12 year old girls turn up saying 'You talking to me......'?? Preferred the band stuff myself ;)

I like most of the above, plus:

  • Resevoir dogs
  • The Untouchables
  • Romeo must die (Gangster movie with martial arts)

Which gets me thinking, do you prefer the old style Italian-American ganster, black-American gangster or triad (Chinese) gangster movies? I personally prefer the Italian-American genre with all their double standards and perverse sense of honour [:)]
