Quite probably lifters and cam are on the way out. If the lifters fail you will get valve damage pretty quickly.
failing hydraulic tappet
when i rev there is a ticking noise and gets quicker the higher i rev and someone said it could be the hydraulic tappet failing, does this sound right? If so will it do any damage?

There are other things that tick as well. Could be an injector, or fuel pump, or small leak in exhaust manifold. Don't panic yet
Easy to eliminate cam wear by pulling the cam cover and inspecting the lobes. Sharp edges and mushrooming at the peaks is a clear sign of failure.
