BF2 gets the thumbs up from me too.  Its Great.  I have no idea on how to start a server though!!  Just got 2GB of ram deilvered today too - much better than my previous 1GB when in game.

I only play on ranked servers, don't see the point in non ranked
servers really unless you want to use all the unlocked weapons. A
ranked server costs a bloody fortune.

What are your specs Diesel?

Im running it on my laptop with 256mb graphics card, 3.4ht pentium chip and 512mb of ram and on a 512kb connection.

I find that the loading times are quite long is this my connection or
my ram? as i can play it with with most of the video setting on high
(about half) with none or very little lag, only when i jump in a plane
it goes all to pot!!

Also it says you need a deticated computer to start a server which you allow other to connect to(correct me if im wrong).

Turn all your settings to medium rather than high, put anti-aliasing on
2x or 4x. It would also help if you had 1Gb of system ram too. A 512k
connection should be ok but if you can upgrade it may help.

An EA ranked server costs a fortune (about ?1k a month I think). You
have to be very careful with RAM as some systems simply can't handle
2Gb even though you can physically put it in there. I would go with 2
512mb sticks as it will be a lot cheaper than a single 1Gb one imo.
Laptop RAM isn't likely to be cheap.

i have a amd 64bit 3500 running 2 x 512mb ram and a 6600GT PCI-E card

All running on high settings and no problems at all

Its a SATA drive 10k spin and I know the load times are fast because when you change maps I'm 1st or second on the map

Thats prob more due to your pci-e card than anything else. I have a
Raptor drive too and am still well behind a lot of people getting into
the game.

AMD Athlon xp3000+ barton CPU, 2GB 333Mhz ram, 9800pro 128mb Gcard.

Find loading faster and lag less with the 2GB. I think yours would load faster too, but as said, I believe laptop memory is expensive. Recommendation is 1GB ram to run the game as far as I know (as is 256mb Gcard[:$])

Most of my settings are on low to minimise lag. I probably could bump some up a little but really hate lag. This guide is handy to show what makes a difference settings wise:-

Diesel I have a very similar setup to you but only have 1Gb of ram.
However I have all my settings to medium and the game runs fine. Just
have a little bit of lag for the first few seconds of the game.

Your system as a whole being Athlon 64 based and having a pci-e graphics card has much higher bandwidth so your pc will process the data much faster and therefore you'll be in the game sooner than those that don't have such systems, i.e: me.
