Hi all

as you all know the 2.0 engine is a bit of a poor choice for tunning.

i currantly have a 2.0 Bora on a 2000 (x) plate and im thinking of changing my engine so i need idea's & advice from you.

After reading this months PVW on Kim Little's MK2 1.8T engine swap i am inspired to do the same for myself.

now hence iv already got a MKiv i hopefully presume i dont have to do as much to my MKiv as the MK2 in the Mag.

so what i intened to do is try to get hold of an early AGU 1.8T engine (drive by cable same as mine) & shoe horn it into my 2.0 engine bay so what i need to know is what i need as in obviously engine, ecu, plus bits and peices what i want to know is can i just plug the 1.8T ECU into my wiring loom and hey prestow the car thinks its a 1.8T or have i got to do some rewiring to connect the 1.8T ECU for it to run.

plus obviously its just a chip change and a bit of fetling from their to get 200Bhp or am i barking up the wrong tree.

your feedback and comments are welcome.

cheers

My advise is don't bother changing the engine of a car if you can buy it with that engine in already. Cars are designed with the engine power in mind, some come with bigger brakes, better suspension etc.

your better off saving your money for a golf with a 1.8t in it.

Also from an insurance point of view you could see higher premiums as the car will be modded.

How many miles has the 2.0 done? You will probably be better off trading it for a 1.8T or V5 than replacing the engine. These days the engine is part of the infrastructure of the car; each variant has its own set of electronics, plumbing and wiring - there is so much more than just the engine to consider.

just what i was thinking, its not worth it if you can buy a bora with that engine or similar in already!

thnx for the replies but this is just a feeler as iv looked into Turbo/Super for my 2.0 8v and it is viable especialy the turbo route but the most i will ever see is 210-220Bhp which is plenty but it just gets to me that the 1.8T boys & girls can get that with a chip change, but at the end of the day it comes down to price! is it worth getting ?3000 of turbo conversion or a 1.8T from a breakers.

cheers

why not just get a S3 lump conversion?

Spending ?3000 just to get 200 odd bhp does not sound feasable (to me)

a few members (such as 4low) have successfully done the s3 conversion

the GTi 2.0 and 1.8t are very similar in terms of mechanics

iv already done my suspension & brakes so now its just down to a bit extra under the bonnet, so i was hoping with an engine from a breakers and a few bits and pieces i could do the job myself as fifteen yrs ago i was a mechanic so i recon i could do the job on my own its just the electrical side of things i was wondering on.

as for money i have got ?1500 to spend, anyway im not gona do anything until the summer arrives so i will do a bit more research and decide if its feasable or to just trade up to some thing else.

cheers

I am too looking to do the same...The 2.0 8v in my concept just isnt fast enough!!! So am looking for a vvt 20vt to stick the yellow peril! The only reason i dont want to buy a 20vt car is i love my yellow concept...interior and most importantly the colour..cant see many yellow 20vt kicking about. I know that 20vt engines are anything between ?1000 - ?1500 depending on mileage and what you need ie loom, ecu, box. I was suprised to find out thoough that Awesome gti dont do conversions, called them today to speak to Jim (he was out) but spoke to another chap who said they dont do conversions??? In the PVW Specialist directory it says they do?

go for it Golf Bird

Why did VW put the 2.0 lump in the colour concepts!! such a shame!

You could always go the whole hog and go for a S3 lump...

I will be looking into a conversion later this year!

maybe cheaper to buy a rear ended totaled 1.8T and breaking it for parts, but keeping the engine etc.

God knows why they did mate, its geared for motorway driving i would say, thats the only reason i can see. I thought of the supercharger option as well...mmmm decisions decisions.

Would an S3 engine go straight in as well??? Never thought of that tbh....now you have me thinking!!!
