Driver Side Window Problem

1297 Views 14 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Pat
Well i got into the car this morning (-10.5c) after de-frosting it (including around the window as i smoke) anyways got out of my drive and went to put the window down and pressed the button once to go down and i heard a clunk (somethings given up) now when i press the down button i can just hear the motor spinning freely and when i press the up button i can hear the motor spin before it comes to a stop.

So with the cold im guessing something has become brittle and snapped, the window isnt falling into the door or anything and its in the fully up position, i havent tried moving it manualy incase it does drop into the door or something.

Ive looked at guides on here and im planning on attacking it before xmas but i dont fancy having to strip the door out (which looks like a time consumeing job) finding the problem then putting it all back together then doing it all again when the part turns up so i just wondered if anyone has had the same problem and could tell me which part it is most likely to be?

Thanks Jack

You've more than likely pulled the regulator clips off the window itself, as the window's frozen in position [:(] I've done it myself.

Not too bad to fix though. Door card off, open up the rubber inspection holes, get the clips into position and re-tighten. However you will need to defrost the window so it'll drop down a bit into the correct position for re-tightening.
Cheers mate, thats great ive got a guide to follow anyways so ill have a look after.

Thanks Jack
It could be a number of different things which you'll need to take the doorcard off no matter what else...............

HOW TO REPAIR A BROKEN WINDOW REGULATOR

Chris.
Yeh thats the guide ive got, dont mind taking the door card off its just what lies behind it, ill take it off and check through the inspection holes and see whats happening there if its not that then ill leave it till after xmas as its not the sort of weather to be messing about in for hours.

Thanks Jack
I've not had one broken YET this winter, they've all been ok when re-clamped so hopefully you'll be ok.

Chris.
Fingers crossed, ive got a half day on wednesday so im hoping to get it done then and ill update with how it goes.

Just to confirm, i have to lower the window manually untill it fits back into the clips then re-tighten them and thats all? but if the window is already in the clips then somehing else has gone caput?

Thanks Jack
If the glass isn't in the clamps loosen them off and guide the glass into them, then tighten them and adjust using the instructions in my guide. If they are still clamped order yourself a regulator repair kit[facepalm].

As you say you hear the motor come to a stop, this is a good sign.If the cables were broken it would just carry on spinning as long as you hold the button down and would never shut off automatically.

Chris.
Thats great mate, yeh like i said above it just constantly spins if i hold down the down button but if i hold down the up button it comes to a stop.

Should only be a 15 minute job to find out weather or not it is the clips, just annoying i have to wait untill wednesday to find out [:(]

Thanks for being so helpful though imagewerx.

mine done the same thing tonite had too wedge a bit of carboard incase the window drops []
Didnt manage to get round to it yesterday as i was needed at work but ive just had a look and yes it had come off its clips, by the looks of things the clips have failed in the past on one of the previous owners as i have the new metal clips!

So yeh it was just a simple case of un-doing the clamps slipping the glass back in and tightening them up, only problem now is that when the windows down all the way about 10mm still sticks up above the door itself, its only on the side where the door pin is though, i heard you mention adjusting them? ive scanned your guide a few times but carnt find anything about adjusting them?

Thanks Jack

Try disconnecting the car battery, then reset the one touch as explained in my guide. This normally lets them drop all the way down.

Chris.
Cheers mate, its now level with the passenger side!

Thanks for all your help!
