Hey guys,

There's a few threads on here which are making me worried.

Picture the scene, reasonably late night, empty private road *cough*, nothing else around and a Golf TDI 90 that struggles to get to 85MPH and only occasionally can get to 90MPH.

Is this normal? Is there anything I can check on this car with entirely standard engine. I hope my baby isnt sick.

My TDi 90 manages 110mph before I chipped it. It easily got to 85-90mph with relatively little effort.

Deffo check your maf. Does it pull consistently from 1900rpm to 3750rpm? That's a sign it's buggered.

Apparently if you take the maf out of the car and the problem has gone, that's proff the maf needs changing.

Something wrong methinks... cd123's SDI can break the ton [:|]
Yeah that's what I watched only minutes before posting.

I'm going to get the MAF changed next week for definite. Actually, I'll run the car around a few blocks tomorrow with the MAF disconnected and see what happens.

Nup, I wouldnt say it does.

MAF change by the looks of things.

Thanks people!

LOL! I pulled the MAF out and drove it along some dual carriageway an hour ago and what a difference. Car is so much better without it.

I went to the local dealers to see what they would charge for it. Apparently VW don't do an exchange with the MAF anymore and it's going to take them 45 minutes of labour to fit. £96.something inc VAT to do. I left them to it and walked out.

I've got another dealer i'll phone later too, but at least I know it's the MAF that's gone!

Just been quoted for a new MAF, and an hour of labour from a very well recommended dealer up here - £144.95 inc all VAT.

Not a happy bunny.

DON'T PAY THAT!

I'm sure the maf isn't that hard to change yourself, so a search on here or vwvortex.

Even if you want a mechanic to do it, get the part from GSF Car Parts, or Euro Car Parts or something and get a specialist to fit it.

I'm sure it doesn't take an hour to fit.

The new units that vw supply have changed the screws so its not as easy as unscrewing one and puttin it in... now you have to change the whole maf housing.. probs take about 5-10mins if you know what you doin.. as its two screws in the airbox.. and one clamp.. and you'll need two people to do it as the new maf housing will be a tight fit with the piping..

I'm going to get a local specialist to do it, unfortunately I dont have the tools or a second body around to help.

Cheers for all your help!
