"Hey Wolfgang, now we've perfected these new 6 speed gearboxes we can up ze torque on ze PD115 engine, in fact vee vill call it ze AJM.... or no ze AUY... yar ?" Said Fritz.
"But Fritz, vee have loads of zee old 115's to use up before we can go using ze high torque version. Ze silly Britishers will not realise anyvay, vell, not for a few years and when zay do it vill be some saddo on some internet forum."
"yar, yar yar"
What you have read above is the scary and confusing nightmare of thoughts and what may have happened at the VW factory about 5 years ago...
Sorry people, but I can't help my imagination once it goes off on one.
Reason being, I've just been reading my new Haynes manual which now covers the PD engine for the very first time. In it, it states the following :-
Max power:-
AJM and AUY = 85kw at 4000 rpm
Max torque :-
AJM 285nm at 1900 rpm
AUY 310nm at 1900 rpm (same as ASZ, PD130)
Ok, I'll remain calm here and say, mine is an AJM BUT and it's a BIG BUT.. mine has a 6 speed box NOT a five speed. I understand that the first 115's were slightly lower on torque due I think to VW being worried the 5 speed could not cope with big torqu) and that the later ones that were mated to the 6 speeds had more torque....
Still with me ?
No ?
OK, I'll spell it out.... I thought I had a high toque 115 due to it having a 6 speed box. Having higher torque and 6 gears, to me = 100% smugness.
But, me having a lowly 115 even though I still have 6 gears has at present reduced my smugness by at least 54%, which means thatI'm now only 46% smugger than other drivers, which is bad. I spent loads of cash on my car to get 6 gears, low fuel bills and 100% smugness, 46% is simply not good enough as I can see it dropping further.
Anyway, there are several possibilities :-
1, The conversation detailed above did take place and VW did put lower torque 115's in Golfs with 6 speed gearboxes and I HAVE been scammed by VW themselves !
2, When Mr Haynes wrote his book, he got it WRONG, just like he did when he says all PD's have front mounted intercoolers on page 4D6 item 7 'Intercooler'. This is not a scam, I'd describe it more as an unfunny and sick practical joke.
Can anyone help me ?
Basically, is
AJM = 285nm ? (mine with 6 speed box and me running at 46%)
AUY = 311nm ?
