Coming from a Scooby, I would expect you to miss the bhp a little bit
with the TDI. A lot of people have been getting pretty decent mpgs with
their GTIs as well (30+). If I had a choice between a well specced TDI
and a basic-ish GTI, I would probably go for the GTI (if I could get
the insurance). No matter how well specced a TDI is it still doesnt
look quite as nice as a bogstandard GTI. If you get the GTI, make sure
you get the 18s and you'll be pretty happy. I don't really think that
you would miss the luxury a great deal.
Goes without saying though that you need to drive both, have a good
look round them (sit in those GTI seats!) and then make a decision.
