My Subaru Impreza is up for sale. I've decided that the Golf is my next purchase but I can't decide on a basic GTi or a full spec TDi.

Would I miss the extra few bhp with the TDi or would I miss the luxury of leather seats with the GTi.

Decision....decisions.............

Coming from a Scooby, I would expect you to miss the bhp a little bit
with the TDI. A lot of people have been getting pretty decent mpgs with
their GTIs as well (30+). If I had a choice between a well specced TDI
and a basic-ish GTI, I would probably go for the GTI (if I could get
the insurance). No matter how well specced a TDI is it still doesnt
look quite as nice as a bogstandard GTI. If you get the GTI, make sure
you get the 18s and you'll be pretty happy. I don't really think that
you would miss the luxury a great deal.

Goes without saying though that you need to drive both, have a good
look round them (sit in those GTI seats!) and then make a decision.

But be warned - getting out for a test drive in the GTI can be bloody fatal. That's how mine ended up on the drive, anyway... As did a few others no doubt []

Isn't it great though that you feel like that after a test drive and really know how great a car is?

I've got a near enough fully specced GT TD and i'd probably go for the GTi. I got mine used and the GTI was about another 2k on top of mine which was too much for me.

I had a GT TDI 2.0 140,and part exchanged this for the GTI,if you like plenty of MPG for your money go with the TDI,yes the GTI is fun but I could`nt fault the TDI one bit.....

Im going to ask if I can have it for an hour or so, that way i can do my typical work run and see what the MPG difference is between the GTI and my TDI. Id love to be able to order a GTI but I estimate that my TDI will save me ?500 a year on fuel. Having said that I'd probably be spending ?2K on my TDI if I keep it but the GTI spec I would like is going to cost ?23K!!

When contemplating spending this kind of money dont ask insist on a long test drive, I arranged to have the car from 11 until 14:00 the other sunday so I could do exactly what you plan and then some, the demo I took had 8,500 miles on the clock but still drove sweet as a nut and I'm guessing it has led a pretty hard life yet the computer still stated an average of 28.9mpg overall - not bad considering. I even took it home to see if I liked the look of it on my drive, did some twisties plus 140mph on a very private road , returned it and told the salesman I needed a few days to think it over - IMO take your time but it'll get you in the end, mines now on order

I also did the fuel calcs' and I'm looking at an extra ?250 ish per year but you only live once and as good as the 2.0tdi is it doesnt really make me smile - the Gti on the other hand had me grinning from ear to ear, let us know how you get on...

It totally depends on type of driving that you do. For me the TDI fits the bill absolutely perfectly. I drive about 600 miles per week on medium / fast A roads, and to do this on one tank of fuel is very convenient. The way the Golf drives makes every journey a pleasure and encourages little detours now and again just to throw it around a bit. I haven't driven a GTI but as I need the economy then the choice for me would be (and has been)a TDI with a few choice extras to make long journeys easier. For me the difficult decision will be justifying not trading up to the new GTI diesel which will surely come along sometime soon. I tend to agree. Though if I could get 40mpg out of the GTI for the daily commute the decision would be much more blured.

Everyone seems to have the GT TDi but recommend the GTi, which is a bit strange.

If I could have got a Gti with sunroof 18's and centre arm rest for the same price as my used GTTD (18k) i'd have gone for it. The only thing that put me off other than GTis are 20k +, was fuel consumption. But if people on here are getting 30-35 out of them then that would have done me even though I cover 18k per year. If fuel isn't an issue i'd go for the GTi some of the items you can spec on the TDi you could live without, I've got leather which I really like, but if was was to go for a GTi I wouldn't bother that cloth looks the mutts nuts

I was made to sign an insurance disclaimer and had a sales guy with me at all times [:S] and the drive lasted just 15 minutes (well my mate wanted to try the GTI as well and then I tested a 1.6 FSI - all within the hour). To be fair I'm not buying any time soon, just wanted to evaluate the dynamics. When I have the cash though, my mind is already set.

Oh the age old question GTi or TDi. I'd say go with the GTi but then i'm biast.

If your looking to mod the engine at a later date the definately go with the petrol as you can get some serious power gains with the right mods

Every time when I fill the tank (always full tank), I will reset the trip counter. In this way I can calculate how many miles have I done, with how many litlers of fuel. Although my high line computers always tell me I am doing 48mpg by average (or 50 something after a long trip), however due to the very short trip (5 min per trip) doing dialy, I am actually only getting 42 mpg by my own calculation. (Don't get me wrong - it is still very good)

Does GTI really gives good mpg after you fill the tank and calculate the miles you've done with that tank of fuel? or are you guys quoting the MPG number shown on your high-line computer?

My feeling to the GT TDi (2.0 Diesel+DSG) is: Paying the fuel cost of a 1.6 petro engine, but getting the power of a 2.8 liter (or even 3.0 litter) petro engine.

Seems to be varying policy's regarding getting cars for lenghs of time. VW have always been funny with me, and never let me take a car out on my own!

When i was mulling over what car to get, my local Seat garage gave me a a near new Black 225 CupraR, on my own, for an hour, no questions asked! I then had the same when i bought my car.... keys, a wave goodbye from the dealership owner, and told me to enjoy myself!

Thats the way it should be, your giving them your hard earned, the least they can do is to make you feel welcome!
