Someone remind me why i never took one of these out for a drive previously???

First impressions of the dealership were great.... very very friendly and helpful people (thats 'helpful'... take note VAG!!). Guy didnt try to hard bargain me or anything, just started telling me what a superb car it was.... and he went out of his way to get a CTR arranged for a test drive.

Soooo, out we went. He drove first. Okay, it looks a little out of the ordinary.. but nothing i cannot live with. And i was pleasantly suprised at the interior, not half as tacky as i was expecting... and it all seemed pretty solid too. Only the bench-like rear seats spoil it IMO.

Silent, absolutely silent at idle... very odd! But jesus... does that thing spring to life [:D]

He took it for a bit, to which i was grinning like an idiot at both the noise, the insane revving, and the almost turbo-esque v-tech shove!

Now came my turn... mwahaha! Was very very very wierd not being in a VAG car.. and took a bit of getting used to. Driving position is spot on too, i instantly felt better than i do in the Golf. That gearstick being there aint such a stupid looking idea after all either! [;)]

Off i went..... holy cow does that car shift.. no torque?.. my ***.. even at low revs that thing is considerably quicker than my GTI. As they rise it becomes nothing short of brilliant... upto 6k it really really shifts (and the noise is awesome).. above that it is just brutal!

Handles like its on rails too... and soaks up holes in the road fantastically well.

The gearbox and clutch are simply sublime, quite easily the best i have ever used. It makes you realise how poor the whole GTI package is!

I can honestly say a car has never impressed me so much.. it does everything i want. So easy to tootle around town, but so easy to go mental whenever you want... it does it all so so well.

Anyone who slags them hasnt driven one .... they are a TRUE drivers car... the S3 and LCR seem positively dull compared to this.

So there we go... decision made, finally. [:D]

Yeah echo some of your comments there Chris.

They are very nice cars without a doubt!

Dealers are friendly, engine/gearbox are truelly great fun

rides very well for a sports hatch

Handling, not so sure about, steering too light for my liking and lacks feedback

Make sure u get one in Black [;)]

Naa, they do have enough torque in the mid range, you'd be suprised once you drive one!

on another note:

If you intend to carry people in the back, you'll find that the front seats don't have a memory position when sliding back into place. Small point, but don't let it spoil the whole package!

I just insisted everyone got in from the passenger side!

Also I didn't notice any lack of torque, when changing I tried a V6 4mo and certainly wasn't blown away by it's torque in comparison.

Handling did feel light.... but i could certainly feel more than the GTI. And by comparison, the Leon felt overly heavy without any real reason for it.

I dont do that many miles, so i dont think i would get tired of it. The noise is infectious, even if a little louder than i expected (even when on half throttle)... but its in another league compared to the booming drone of the 1.8T IMO.

mmmmmmmmm, image though........You will be branded a "Barry Boy", Chris!

Will any surplus from the new site hosting payapl fund be going toward neon valve caps?? LOL

Before I got the golf 18T I tried the pug 180, the clio then 172 and the CTR. The honda was very nice and quick, but the Clio absolutely blew me away. Soooo torquey, and a good top end rush. The pug I found very bland, with horrid drive position!

CTRs are no shabby motors though for sure. I believe you can get some rechips that give then an extra 30 horses too?!!!p

Loads of people slag off CTR's without actually driving them

They have enough torque low down, interior is fine, and unless you need loads of effortless midrange grunt, they would be fine day to day

And when the mood grabs you, boy do they deliver [:D]

It wasn't the midrange grunt that put me off day to day use and I covered 10k in mine so got quite a bit of use out of it. The main issues I had was the comfort of the seats on long journeys and the fact it just begged to be drove fast all the time. Over the period I owned it I also found fuel consumption was consistently under 20mpg.

I don't know why. A few of suggested that it wuld be the car to suit you, on your original fancy a change thread http://www.uk-mkvs.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36530

I quote myself:

Have you driven a CTR chris . I don't think they are too in your face as standard, and it's ticks nearly every box for you .

Glad your happy, and have now found the car you want. Good luck with the sale / search.

The CTR is a quick car and when making comparisons with cars with greater torque, we whould all remember that torque is not everything

In the CTR cf 1.8T you simply need to adapt your driving style, meaning more gear changing which could be construed as greater driver interaction with the car if you are so inclined.

OEM 1.8T vs OEM CTR I'd pick the CTR every time, not for pace but for being a drivers car, which is hardly a claim that VW can make....[;)]

Bunkered in, flame suit on, take your best shot![:D]

i don't know how you can call a CTR a chav car?[:(!]

firstly you have to be at least over 21 to even get insured by most companies on it.

secondly you then have to afford the insurance.

thirdly you have to afford the car in the first place.

a CTR does not look 'chav'd' up, it looks sporty, just how a hot hatch should look.

chav drivers usually drive clapped out old cars that have had plastic stuck on here and there driven by compltete idiots who have no thought for saftey or otherwise of other road users that actaully pay to use the roads.

I just don't see the comaparsion personally!

Chris what colour, spec are you going for?

i've always fancied red with the tints

ooohhh, less than 20 mpg from a ctr?? I would have thought they would be pretty good on gas, light weight, efficient motor?

You musta been raggin it to death!??

It's very efficent until in VTEC and that's where it begs to be!

Red is the colour i reckon mate! Although black is nice... id prefer to stay away from that colour again [:)]

I choose Red and never regretted it, looked fantastic, I'll post up a pic when I get home.
