Has anyone retrofitted cruise control to their car? I've found a
kit on ebay for about ?70 - indicator stalk and wiring loom. Went
to vw today and the stalk was ?52 incl VAT!! But no loom, and vw
don't supply it. Apparently, so the engineer said, it becomes
really difficult because it should work in theory but it doesn't.
He said that they'd given up on a similar job a few months ago because
it just wouldn't work. The guy at the Parts Desk did add "Bloody
enginieers" - which implies that he doesn't think much of them!

Anyone got any experiences/advice? As I see it, all I need to do
is install it, then get a vag-com to activate it? (Was told this
by a v clever vw person on tyresmoke!!)

Cheers!!

That's the main stealers for you!

Retrofitting cruise control should be reasonably straight forward once you've got all the parts, tho your contact on tyresmoke is correct you will need vag-com to activate it. I think the biggest issue (and one that would prevent me doing it myself) is that you have to remove the steering wheel including the airbag!!

However, depending on your budget, a decent VW specialist should be able to do it for between 200-300 +VAT. I know that Awesome GTI in Manchester do it for 199+Vat (my boss is about to get it installed on his VW Passat) that's the propper VW stalk btw (there are some that don't use the factory stalk).

Removing the steering wheel and airbag is a doddle - don't let that put
you off, believe me, I've been there - removing the wipers and all the
under-dash plastic is a *much* bigger job! :)

However - I've fitted the stalk and loom to my PD 130, enabled it in
Vag-com and it still doesn't work, and I've no idea why... :( :(

golfv64mo - Is yout pd130 an import, because mine is and he said that
also causes trouble with electrical stuff. I said "It's a rhd
golf made in w germany, then imported. how are the non-imports
made then?" and he said I had a good point. Can't see how that
would cause trouble!

Bloody VW - Foxy's website even gives the part number of the wiring loom that they "Don't supply!"
Tell them to put it into they're black and green screen... it does come up on there but not on ETKA. It should also come up on the blue screen for a price too. I ordered mine and got it a few days later.[:D]

Thanks evilhomer! I'll pop in tomorrow and have another go.
They, like many others, will be sick of the sight of me before long!!

My car's an import (only found out today) Is that a good or a bad thing, and will that affect my ruise control plans?

Doubt it, shouldnt make any difference as long as your car has drive by wire throttle. (Later 1.8T's.) earlier ones had mechanical throttle so just make sure.[:D]

Can someone please confirm for me what is envolved in retro fitting the cc unit to 4motion. i have all the parts (got them from foxy's last GB). I am lead to believe that the 4motion is part wired so is it just a case of fitting the stalk and activating it with vag com or do i need to start ripping the dash out as described in foxy's and rallychris's how to, (Both on non V6's)

cheers

Have you got the part number for that loom? because today he said that he didn't have a record of it. I got one loom number from Foxy's website, but that one came up as unknown. Also, he said that not all engines have cruise enabled and said that if my engine type didn't have it enabled, there was no way of getting cruise. my engine code is AGR.I've looked at some cruise control stuff on ebay -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4551646336&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

And the table on that says that my engine code is compatible. Although that's just someone's guide. Do you think it's ok?

Yeah your stealers are talking through thy're robot like posteriors.... if the AGR lump is in the list, then it IS compatible. I cant remember the Part number of the top of my head, but I got the detail from the same place you did, foxys website so again the stealers parts dept is crap. They obviously havnt run it through thy're other screens, cos ive seen it work fwith my own eyes!!! (I have a good realtionship with my local parts dept)

Went down the stealers today - I explained what had been said the
previous trips to VW to a nice young lad (my age-ish) "Well that's
fine......... HOLD EVERYTHING!! He just called me. Said the
stalk is in stock and he just didn't see it when I went in earlier, and
the loom I want has been made obselete & unorderable -
TODAY!! So when I went to order it yesterday, and was told it
wasn't right, I would've got it if it weren't for that bloody idiot old
man!! So now I'm stumped. What do I do to get a loom for my
cruise control? Any ideas?

Big thanks to Shaq!! If he hadn't put me in touch with VAG Parts
a few weeks ago, I wouldn't have been able to get the loom I
need!! Just called them and they have the part on the shelf and
I'm going to pick it up tomorrow!! Yay!!!
