ok, heres the situation.

im 20, student, have no source of "regular" income. and i drive a 1.6 16v bora.

i paid 3 grand to insure it, and i know its nothing compared to you big engine guys - but its costing me a lot to put fuel in, considering my circumstances.

anyways. ive got a baby on the way. so i was pondering the idea of selling the bora. and getting a mk4 1.4S golf.

cheaper insurance, cheaper tax, and cheaper fuel costs?? right??

im not bothered about the non-existant performance, as id have a baby in the car. so speed isnt in the equation.

what benefits would i feel from dropping to a 1.4 golf?

would it be worth the hassle?

would the differences be beneficial enough to justify this move?

would there be any downfalls, posible regrets, etc??

your experienced opinions please.

thanks in advance

Do you really NEED a car ?

That ?3k you spend in insurance will go a long way to buying baby stuff.

You should consider reducing that before worrying about fuel.

?3k is 50 tankfuls. Even at a conservative 350 miles per tank you're looking at 17,500 miles per year.

Perhaps consider a diesel ?

Lower insurance AND petrol costs.

i always pay my insurance off in 1 lump sum. so monthly payments dont come into play.

when i was deciding between a PD bora, or 1.6 bora, the PD was more to insure. lots more.

maybe that will be different this renewal hopefully.

1 of my crashes will be off record, i'll have NCB, and be 21

?3000 for insurance. WOW.

I don't think that a 1.4 is going to be much better on fuel than your 1.6.

Insurance is going to be better but as said above, do you really need a car?

Just be carefull as the cost of changing the car may be greater than the fuel/insurance savings.

Good luck with it which ever way you go and congratulations on the baby.

i would rather walk than pay ?3k buddy

sell it and buy a mk3 TDI to run about in till the baby is born and settled

then at least you have the ready cash for anything for the baby

i do love my cars and modding but i have always said that family (i.e. baby) and a house will always coe first when the time comes

good luck with the car and the baby [;)]

I'm not even sure the insurance would be lower as Bora's tend to be less to insure than Golf's anyway.

?3k just sounds ridiculous though, they must consider you a very high risk. Have you made any large claims?

I'm 19 and have just downgraded to a 1.4S but I love it, its more of a sidegrade from my past audi A3, i had the 1.6 and i find the performance on the golf only marginally slower. It certainly aint the fastest car in the world but it is cheap to tax, insure etc. Just have to weigh up what you're after really.

The position I was in was that i wanted a decent german car that looked the part but was cheap to insure and run, and cos i'm not a small guy couldnt get a polo or anything like that, so in walked the 1.4S. Great car, does exactly what it says on the tin and if you find a nice one like I did you'll be laughing![:D]

Didn't think the 100 was a PD

the golf match came in the 100 PD option IIRC

I think you've been had on the insurance. Unless you've got points on your license a 20yr old shouldn't be paying more than ?1500. Especially as your not in a big engine

?3k Insurance??? How?! Sorry, I dont understand why people pay such large amounts of money for insurance! And its only a 1.6! Have I missed something?

I have never paid over ?900 fully comp!

Cant you keep getting online quotes for different cars? Or do they affect your credit rating or something? Have I got the wrong end of the stick?!

credit rating wouldnt bother me as i buy everything cash.

i dont think the quotes count anyway, so i did many.

3k TPFT was the cheapest i could find.

at the time of getting the car, i was 19, no NCB, and had 4 crashes.

plus, my postcode isnt too clever.

3k was the cheapest i could get.

i was loaded at the time.

more money than sense i suppose

4 crashes is gonna kill your insurance, any car you buy will still probably have high insurance for the next few years

To tell you the truth, i was 20 student

when i got my Golf GTI (1.8T)

Cost ?250 per month (Total: ?3000p/a) for insurance,

coz i'm not a U.K citizen (I do not hold a U.K License)

and Had no "no claims bonus".

It was hard, but i worked whenever i got time (mostly nights)

and i paid the price, even through times of trouble,

coz its the BESTEST ESTEST car you could ever have.

So.... IMHO you should upgrade to a 1.8T or better,

and you'll probably work harder and earn more;

unless you dont love your car.

LOL

P.S Im now 22 and my insurance has gone down alot

and of all the cars out there you bought a 1.6 Bora ?

Get some insurance quotes, or wait until you're 21 (less than 1 year), and consider changing car.
