Ive been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to turn the climatronic off with just one push of a button rather than holding down the fan button (which isnt safe when your on the M25 doing whatever mph with road works !)

Ive come to know Im not the only one with the headache, hence the step to make this into a thread. So, youll be helping me AND others :D

thanks !

It is one of the two really stupid things about the Climatronic and so atypical of VW. The other stupid thing? Displaying the outside temperature instead of the temperature inside the car. You've got the outside temp on the dash, Climatronic should show the temp setting and the current interior temp in my opinion.

ah fock, cant believe thats the only way to do it (just doesnt make sense !!)

Why do I need to switch it off ? Im on the motorway, inside temp is fine but windows are steaming up ... what do i do ? press the windscreen button so fna blasts the screen clear ... once thas done in like 10 seconds, I wanna shut it off, without holding down the fan button !! Oh and Im on my own, before someone says "get the passenger to shut it off" :p

argh, so annoying.

The temperature inside the car will be whatever you set the Climatronic to[;)]

LOL. Cute comment. Yes, it will get there eventually. However, in my case it can sometimes be in excess of 35C when I get in the car and I'm sure I don't drive long enough for it ever to get down to 21 unless ambient is about 25.

Still, given you've got the external temp on the dash, why would you want to display it again on the Climatronic?

There are a couple of problems here, so let me explain

If the windows steam up, you're correct in saying you hit the windscreen demist button - This is the quickest way to clear all the windows. This is because the climatronic turns on the AIRCON to produce dry air, and hence dry's the windows/cabin REALLY quickly.

The problem is, when you switch off the AIRCON (by turning the climatronic completely OFF, or hitting ECON) you are immediatly allowing moist air back into a dry cabin.

This is why the windows steam back up REALLY QUICKLY!!!!!

So in all honestly, to avoid windows/cabin steaming up in the 1st place, you either:

a) Leave the climatronic ON all the time and never switch it off!! - ie AUTO(and set the required temperature)

Or

b) you NEVER EVER switch on the aircon/climate control (so it always displays ECON at ALL TIMES).

It's switching between AUTO then ECON that causes the windows to steam up

Simple, don't turn it off - let it do it's job. Once the windscreen is clear switch it back to auto, as GTi Fly says that's what it's there for.

Keep the temperature stable (no more than a couple of degrees change) and you shouldn't have any problems. I switch the 'windscreen clear' on if it's fogged up first thing in the morning then leave it on auto all the time - no probs - ever.

edit meant to add - clean your windows with a good chamois and the tendancy to steam up will be much reduced - something about the natural oils in a chamois(?)

pope1...I agree. Actual inside temp would be useful I think. I wonder if a wiring guru could get an actual temp input from one of the internal sensor feeds to display instead of the outside temp sensor feed???? i,e using the knowledge from http://www.ffp-motorsport.com/tuning/18tcodes.php

Using those codes, you can get the Climatronic to display the internal temp but (1) it's a PITA doing that every time you get in the car; (2) Climatronic display little else once it's doing that.

Suspect that you cannot change the wiring to the Climatronic because it cannot have a direct connection to the sensor(s) otherwise you would not be able to switch between all the different functions. It must have some kind of data connection, perhaps to the ECU. You'd have to change the internal logic of the thing as to what it displays on the screen.

Yes, only in the summer when the aircon is actually required....

Climate control is an 'intelligent system' that only uses the aircon when necessary, hence in the winter it's unlikely to kick in at all. The sensors will ensure that the temperature s elected is kept steady at all times, if it's hot then it'll use aircon, if cold, the heater...

So all this stuff about extra fuel consupmtion is blown out of proportion, it's only 1 or maybe 2mpg at the worst case. If you're worried, then walk to the pub instead ;-)

yeh but doesnt the petrol consupmtion increase if you just leave it on all the time uncessesarily (come on guys, help me here im a student ! :p )

If you are that worried about fuel consumption then you wouldn't have bought a V5........

In any case, the a/c compressor will only switch on when it is required so just let the system get on with it in AUTO. The whole point of having climate control is so that the car does everything for you - if you keep switching it on and off then you are going to have problems as listed above. If you actually want to fiddle endlessly with the HVAC controls because the temperature inside the car is never stable, then buy a car with only manual aircon.

Back to the 'turning the fan noise off after demisting the screen' - just press the demist button again OR the AUTO button to put it back into auto mode which will slow the fan down. Why on earth would you want to switch it completely off?
