Hi guys,

Due to the hot weather we're currently having, its great that the car has Air con/climate.

However, driving around yesterday on the motorway, windows up, I switched the climate on, put it on LO and waited to be cooled down. Gave it a few mins and all that came out was warm/hot air. I tried fiddling with the other buttons on the climate, but still got no cold air. Granted its very hot outside and i realise the temp on the climate only goes down to 18 degrees and then LO, but is that it??

Is this just what climate control is like? or do i have a problem with the compressor or anything??

On my previous cars that have had air con, its always been icy cold air.

Can anyody help please?

is this the first time in months u have used it if so it may need re-gassing

really eventhough its winter you should use it for a couple of minutes a week cause the air con gas acts as a lubricant for the air con system and keeps everthing moving

No, i use it constantly. Only had the car 4 or 5 weeks tho. Its always been fine and nice temps etc when the weather isn't so hot. Its just now it is, i've realised its never been cold like it should be and needs to be..

The fella who had it before didn't use the car very often, so maybe that's a sign it may need re-gassing.. Normally how long do the units last before they need re-gassing??

Cheers

Gaz,might be worth checking the exterior temp sensor-located behind the lower near side grille in the front bumper. I only suggest this because mine became disconnected in november, and caused the climate control to blow hot air, even when set to lo. I think this is a sort of inbuilt override,as my exterior temperature was showing as -50 degrees! May be worth a quick look? I had my climate re gassed last june, car was just 3 years old,and they said it didnt need much putting in. Having said that,i dont know if the previous owner had ever had it regassed, but i wouldnt have thought so in 2 years/18k. Hope this may be of some help. Cheers, Paul.

More than likely just needs a regas. If it has no or little gas in the compressor won't even switch on as it works off a pressure switch. You should use the air-con for 15mins a week i think they suggest to keep the seals and parts lubricated. The system has special oil in which just sits there if you dont use it, then the seals become dry and dont do their job. The system when working correctly will get down to about 5 degrees, some slightly lower! I had one at 3 degrees the other day, a ford of all cars!!

Book it in for a regas, we charge ?50 but i gather the average cost is about ?99. Still not bad for the pleasure you get! [:)]

You did have the climate set to AUTO didn't you and not ECON?  With it set to ECON the air con compressor is turned off.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I've checked the exterior sensor and that's fine and yes it was on AUTO and still pumps out hot air.

The car's still under warranty. Anyone know if this i'll be covered if it needs re-gassing??

Cheers

I read on this forum a while ago about a guy who had the same problem as you and I think it turned out to be his water pump? I'm not 100% sure though. What's your temperature saying? It is sitting at 90 all the time?

No idea really Mart - esp as mines not brilliant either.

I'm gonna ring VW today and see what they say.

Same here - my parents have a 307 and theirs gets really icy cold. So cold in fact that I have to ask them to turn it off. When mine is on LO it doesn't get as cold and I don't need to turn it off because I'm too chilly.

That was the same as on my old Focus. It was either on or off and when on it was icy cold. When my climate now is on LO, its warm to hot, not remotely cold. [:(]

Hi Gaz,

Almost certainly sounds like you need a re-gass as yours isn't even kicking in due to low system pressure.

But be warned it isn't superb when its working....I leave mine on LO all the time and its just right in the cabin...although like I said when I stop moving OR SITTING IN TRAFFIC!!! the cold air stops and before i know it im in a sauna!!

I phoned VW and found its not covered by warranty, which i expected.

I then phoned my local dealer (Sinclair VW Bridgend) who quoted me ?79.99 for an Air con service. This consists of evacuating the system, re-gassing and cleaning.

I then phoned a company in the Yellow pages (www.yell.com) who could also do it, and it came out as ?20 call out, and ?55 Air con service. Or i can go to him and just pay the service charge.

Both places said sounds like it needs re-gassing.

I had my system re-gassed on Friday and it doesn't feel as cold as it did 2 years ago when I had my compressor replaced.

Once thing I have noticed, is when starting the car and s electing AUTO the system initially starts blowing cold air for say 60 seconds, then the fans cut for 2 sec and restart, though this time the air is still chilled, but not as good as before when first s electing AUTO mode.

I'm off to visit the guys that fitted my replacement compressor tomorrow and see what they say.

Mine is ok at the moment and will pull the temp down to about 7 degrees where it exits the vents but probably still needs a re-gas in the near future.

I reckon there is a bit more to this on apparently recently re-gassed systems.

Has anyone measured and / or checked the heater air flap angle(s) with vagcom ?

I'm sure the when your in the measuring blocks doing this, it displays the actual flap angle against what is that flaps range.

Just a hunch but it could be related to the heater flap not completely cutting off the heat.

Getting fed up with the car and the heat!!

Took it to the fella found in the yellow pages last week. Re-gassed it, but still nothing! Checked the pump and its not working! No power going to it apparently. Checked all the fuses and all fine. This guy didn't have any wiring diagrams on his pc and when he suggested leaving it with him for the day i made my excuses and left! [:O]

Spoke to my local VW dealer who wanted to charge me ?80 an hour labour to check the whole thing! Told them where to go and did another runner. [:O]

Today - Found a local air con specialist through a good friend.

He went over the car and looked at all the parts and confirmed, enough gas in system, no power to pump and fans not working due to no power too. Not likely to be faulty parts, definately an electrical problem. He's got a dianostic machine plugged in and suprisingly it shows NO FAULTS!! Confused the both of us that one!

Basically he's having the car next tuesday to check all the wiring and work out what's going on, starting at the Climate control unit in the dash.

No idea how i'm going to survive driving around in this heat until then!! [:(][:'(]

Only other possibilities i know of are possibly the clutch on the compressor (tho likely to have been checked this morning) or a faulty resistor??, tho no idea where this is located?, somewhere by the fans i'm guessing.

Anyone have any other ideas, feel free to post up.

Thanks

Gaz

I think it could be the other way round... The fact that the fans aren't working means the compressor won't start. This happened to my 1.6 Golf. The fans would not come on when AC was on and wouldn't come on when the car was too hot (caused head gasket to go). The mechanic replaced the temp sender (i think).. Apparently there are two. One on the engine and one on the radiator? Once these two components were replaced my air con worked fine! Unfortunately it was too late to save my head gasket, that had already gone.

Btw, the air con on my Bora V5 works really well.. Even in this heat, setting it to 20 degrees c will get it nice and icey in the car. If I put it on LO I get a headache due to it being too cold.
