My dad wants to buy a classic coupe or convertible, around the ?10k mark, and he's looking for suggestions. [;)]

Anyone got any idea's?

I just found this, which I think is perfect, but most likely around the 15-16k mark, which'll prob be too much [:(] Such a shame as she's a stunner.

i would probably look for a mint classic triumph for that money.

I love the TR4A, my parents used to have one, but gave it up to start a family:

I agree with Hornetrider, Karmann Ghias look lovely, not sure on pricing though. There were some mint ones at Tatton Park last year.

How old a car does he want? An original '86 Sierra Cosworth is a classic now and one could be had for that kind of wedge.

If that Pagoda is in good nick you're probably talking 20k plus. The later model (think Beverley Hills Cop) is nearer 10k but it would still be a bit ropey. My dad paid 16k for his and it's pretty mint. See here http://www.silverarrows.co.uk/ My personal favourite http://www.silverarrows.co.uk/stock/1969%20280SL%20azurite%20-%20A%20large.html

Good suggestion with the Triumph. A TR6 would be good for 10k. Proper car [:D] My dad sold his to get the Merc but I think he'd have it back tomorrow if he could.

You'll pick up a really nice example Karmann Ghia for about the 8/9K mark. Gorgeous cars, cheap to service DIY, any classic convertible you're going to want to garage anyway so don't see any problems getting your money back in future or actually making money.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rob old ladies to pay for a Karmann Ghia (I prefer the coupe) but it sounds like a Beetle and it goes like a Beetle. If someone is after a classic coupe or convertable I doubt that it's top of their list.

Went to see the Pagoda in person - wow is all I can say [:)] Wants ?17500 for it though [:(] My dad is lusting over it though, those kind of old school Merc's are his dream car, but it has a lot more than he wants to spend.

Oh and that blue Pagoda you linked to [:O][8D]

He's not keen on the Karmann Ghia, which is a shame 'cos I love em. Same with the cossie/beemer, I think he wants something a bit older/less retro. Looking into Triumph's now though, so many to look through [:p]

A few ideas:

Early 50's Austin Healy Sprite (or even the Frogeyed one if it takes your fancy)

Jag E-Type

Jag XJS Convertible

70's Lotus Elan (Plus Two) Cabrio

Porsche 912 or early 70s 911

60's Ford Mustang (if he doesn't mind the LHD)

Could even ship something from the States (which is not as expensive as you might think) especially as the ? is strong against the $. Try http://www.vipclassics.com/page1.html - I loved this showroom when I was in San Diego.

Forget the Ferrari, it'll cost virtually as much each year to run !!

You could easily pick up an old Porsche for that sort of money. It'll run all day, and will not kill you on the running costs.

codswallop there are plenty of specialists, and aalot of the parts can be swapped with lancia themas and fiats, evo did a test a few years ago between a ferrari dino, 911 and a lambo, the lambo was most expensive the porsche next but surprisingly the ferrari was cheapest by a long way partly because of parts inter-change-ability

Hmmm I'd still look at the Audi Quattro... the Ferrari is a collectors car... you drive it ten miles then walk back and collect the bits that have fallen off!! stick with the sausage munchers... not sure how much 911 you'll get for that much money though..

I have been looking at prices for W127 Mercedes SL's for ages now and you would get a fairly decent one for that money but if he could go to ?15k you would get a mint example. Have a look at http;//www.mercseller.com I have bounced a few e mails back with him and seems very genuine, he matches people to cars and provides some security.

You should be able to get a porsche 911sc for around that money, possibly LHD though, Thats what i'd spend 10k on personally. I would also echo dels comments about the 635csi bmw, a workmate had a highline version and loved it, you can also get bmw 850's around 10k but they are only 15 years old so maybe not a classic
