Just had a lateral thought. If we are talking cheap, can you get a key cut by a lockie after buying a blank key off ebay, buying some beers for someone with VAGCOM and turning off the immobiliser. Bit of a risk but you DID say the cheapest way, not necessarily the best!!!!!

So to recap

I buy a complete key of ebay 2 button remote type( as long as its the same part no, and frequency)

Replace the blade part and get it cut at timpsons etc

i can pair up the remote locking myself ??

Then need someone with VAGCOM to code in the used key ?

Anyone who can recommend someone near durham to do it possibly ??

How will i be able to tell what immobaliser my golf has as some are rechippable and some are not so the link says ??

With the age of your car, yours will be immo2 or earlier so if you find a key with the same part number you have a good chance that the transponder chip will be able to recoded.

I would always recommend buying a cheap (non remote) key like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/REPLACEMENT-VW-KEY-BLANK-HAA-LIGHT-/150535406576?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item230c9c03f0
it only costs around £6-10 per new transponder chip.

www.keysinthepost.co.uk can supply a cut key from a photo for around £10

This is similiar to what i did below[Y]

Note if you go for the newer style key make sure it has the correct Transponder for your car.

function item() { [native code...e/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110623411489

You need to cut and code it, it wont be anywhere near the dealer figure[Y]

sorry to hijack a little bit.....

the plastic part of the key that the battery sits in has the key ring part attached to it. my metal bit has snapped off so if i bought a used one of the bay, would it be ok to just use this part from the ebay one and add it to the remainder of my key.

i only ask as this part has all of the part numbers and freq info on it and apart from the battery, nothing else.

thanks
