Had this problem on my 1.8T. replaced a number of items but eventually found the root cause. in my case. it turned out to be the fusebox that sits ontop of the battery. Check it for any signs of melting around the "dog bone" fuses. mine had this, and it's where there's a poor connection between the common live rail, and the fuses themselves. the fuse then pulls too much current as the connection is poor and melts the plastic. the fact it has melted the plastic shows the poor connection. in the days leading up to this discovery, i also replaced the MAF sensor as the idle was erratic, cleaned the throttle body, swapped the coolant temp sensor, and the fuel pump relay, as i could hear it switching/shorting, under the dash. none of the above contributed to the soving the poor starting. the engine turned over really well, but wouldn't start. Check your battery fusebox- it may well be that. check all the nuts are tight on it, and that the battery terminals are tight. it may be worth removing the fusebox entirely, strip it, and clean the metalwork with emery paper to ensure a really good connection is made. hope this helps.
