Have about 4k or so to spend on a car for the wife. Need to be able to fit the pram in the boot - Mamas and Papas Freestyler Sport. Don't need anything quick - trying to keep running costs down. Need something safe for her and the kiddie and preferably with air-con. Any ideas?

Toyota Yaris. My wife has one and loves it, in fact she's on her second. Totally reliable, good dealers, economical (~45 mpg), nippy, 4 star ncap, looks good, always near the top of JD power surveys, in fact all round top car! Also, the back seat slides so you can choose between bigger boot and leg room! For 4-5K you should get a 3 year old one, but no A/C.

a year 2000 would be a mk5 polo.

again, the boot isnt huge, so you would have to take the pram along and try it in the boot to make sure. At least you know your misses & kids will be safe in a VW.

My wife has a mk4 polo and with 90k on the clock it has never let us down over 80k miles. Partly the reason we got another 8v VW engined car.

not sure on all the specs, but my wife's mk4 1995 N 1.6 glx has power steering, driver & passenger airbags & ABS. I would imagine all but the basic 1.0 would have power steering.

Although the passenger airbag was disabled to enable the use of a child car seat.

I would have thought you could get a MK5 Polo for that money though ?
