A few question if I may, Ill try and make it simple for no other reason than I dont know what Im talking about.

1 - Can you JUST chip a PD130? i.e: dont update anything else such as exhaust, filter, MAF (whatever that is).

2 - If yes what gains can you expect?

3 - Does it effect reliability on anything?

4 - Do you HAVE to tell your insurance company, I know the answer is yes but would they ever know, what if I wrote it off and they inspected the car?

Thats about it I think, reason for asking is I want more power etc but I dont want to start paying for this then that then another thing.

Thanks in advance!

If you wrote it off and they inspected the car, they could have the ecu checked through the diag port - that would probably show it up.

Worst case scenario is that you knock someone over and mame them, they are going to be looking for some massive payment/compensation from your insurers. Faced with that, the insurers will be over the car like a rash to try and escape - if they do find youve chipped it and not told them, you may well be faced with a very very large personal injury court case.

My answers on the rest would be..

Yes you can just Chip/remap a TDI but... If its a bog standrad TDI130 - i.e you have the tractor suspension like mine - then that extra power could tempt you into a corner at a higher speed than normal - which on that suspension could be nasty.

Power after chipping depends largley on the power before - some 130s have been "claimed" to have 145bhp as standard - typical or expected figure would be 170 ish bhp and you shouldnt be disapointed at all.

Anything over and above the standard power will affect reliabiity of certain components (gearbox, clutch etc), but the TDIs are built strong in the first place (very high compression), so you shouldn't have to worry too much.

Others have said that the torque after chipping has caused the clutch to slip - so an uprated clutch may be on the cards....

1. Yes you can just chip it if thats all you want to do, no other mods needed.

2. According to the Jabba website, your bhp will go upto 184-196bhp, although that seems a bit high to me, I would have thought around 170-180[?]

3. It doesn't afect your reliability, does affect your warranty.

4. I would advise you tell your insurance company, and yes they can tell by inspecting it.

Well thank you to BOTH of you[^], I might get it done, it does sound like fun. Not too bothered about the suspension due to the type of driving I do (motorway 95% of the time) and I am pretty sensible to be honest.

I would tell my insurance company going on what you have said.

Final questions - promise, if I was to do it where is the best/closest place to go (I live in Essex), how much would it cost and finally my car has done 71k miles (only 15k by me), is it still wise to chip it or would this not matter?

There are a number of companies who can do the upgrade for you, Revo, AMD, Jabba, costs vary, the Revo remap is ?499 + vat and gives about 180bhp and 280ftlb of torque, it can be switched off using an SPS1 switch which costs extra, but if you don't need switching, don't buy the switch.

The suspension upgrade would be my advice after the upgrade, but you could use the GTi springs, which you'll find lots of people selling on the forum or eBay for a reasonable price.

I'm based in Suffolk, but my mum lives in Rayleigh, so I could do it for you when I next pay her a visit. it takes about 20 minutes to load the new map.

Check out the options, if you're interested in a Revo remap, email me.

before mine was chipped it went on the jbs rr. it was 130bhp dead which shows how well the dyno is set up there[:D]

No it doesn't they'll all chip to very similar figures. Most that were supposedly putting out a lot more just didn't have the dyno setup correctly. A few bhp maybe but not 15-20 as some have claimed.

erm, I'm with Nik... 184-196 from a 130 is VERY optimistic... you would need a lot of work to get that (filter, downpipe, exhaust, maybe cams too etc etc)

You can chip a standard 130, and you should get about 175bhp and 300lb/ft BUT!! I would recommend a new filter (whether it be a green or new vw paper one) as the muck that collects in it can make such a difference (10bhp in my difference!)

It sure made a hell of a difference to your RR graph Mike!

Hehe, you're not kidding... especially after being berated by James for being a "muppet" I though it best I get a new filter lol!

Got the graphs next to me here in fact!

Did find the 184-196bhp claim a bit funny, who are they trying to kid.[:D][:D]

Andy, I believe there is a Revo dealer in Lakeside Thurrock (just around the corner to me[:D]), or failing that if you decide to get Upsoluted, I think Simon Coe will come out to you.[?][?]

Talking of insurance and chipping, do your insurance companies ask by how much the bhp increase is to your car as a claimed modification? My insurance would not insure mine if it had more than a 10% increase. I am sure they know you get more than a 10% gain from chipping.

That said, would they rolling road the car in the scenario above (you mame someone with your car) to try and see if the car has been chipped to a bhp level more than you claimed, in order to get out of paying???

Thats a bit disingenuous when applied to turbocharged petrol or diesel cars as any tuner who offered less than a 10% power increase would not have a sustainable business. Just shows the limited understanding that insurers have of motoring and motoring enthusiasts.[:(]

Don't hesitate it's worth every penny!!

We do the Dual System reversible re-maps they give 172 BHP and 378Nm @ 1900 RPM.

You could get over 180 bhp but you would get turbo and clutch problems

Dual System is unique in its ability to program upgraded software into a car. There are a few different choices on the market of "switchable" ECU programs, Dual System offers an advanced alternative to these choices.

There will never be any issue over manufacturers warranty as the vehicle can be switched back to standard at anytime without any trace of upgrading having taken place.

There you go Andy, everyone has pitched up with their favourite or product! It's up to you now, have fun, you won't regret it.

On the insurance side I use Adrian Flux who were pretty good, I put the increase at 20%, arguing that as standard it puts out about 160bhp.
