I seem to have read on a post that your supposed to have your belt changed at 40k. Well Ive just had mine serviced at 43k & it wasnt changed, although they did inspect it.

Should I be worried about it breaking, she's set on variable ?

Just wondering cos hopefully she's be getting Jabbered soon.

I need to do this too and thought 60k was a good time to do it.. then it'll be ready for upsolute.. might be worth doing the water pump at the same time too then.... eeeek.. do you think I could source the pump and peripherals from say, VAGparts.com and then take it to the garage to fit ? Anyone done this before ?

I had one go on my last car, before it was due, hence the reason for getting a little worried.

got my car back today from having waterpump, tensioner and cambelt and they told me that the recommended length is 60k even though the handbook says that they are only inspected at 60k and changed at 120k. Just aswell really, ive done just over 59k. For tdi's the recommended time to change cambelt is 40k according to haynes. I would highly recommend changing belts at the required interval to save valuable mod money!!?!

I used to drive a 1999 1.8 20v NA and the cam belt on that snapped at 69300 miles whilst I was doing 60mph up the M1. The damage was something like 3grand inc VAT, paid for by either VW or PHH (I let them argue amongst themselves).

I bought my TDI with 52k on the clock and had the cambelt changed at 60k, just incase it hadn't been done at 40k! Better to be safe than sorry

Jace,

My 130PD Bora was done at 60k, cost of belt and tensionsers, along with a variable service was just under ?500 from a dealer. Dealer said it depends on engine code, they had a look-up sheet for them, but it looked like the 130's and 150's were all 60k from what I could see, but definitely worth checking with a (decent) dealer!

When it goes, the car overheats...simple. My impellors were slipping in the pump so it had to be replaced. Whenever i hit the higher revs, obviously the pump was working harder, causing the slipping. And STOP...Check Coolant on the trip computer and the temp guage goes to the max (or mine did)...after stopping the car, it cooled back to normal 90.
